Yeah, I think your so right, I have lived in Britain for 2 years... Most
musicians have very crappy and cheep gear and are generally from the
"working class", but comes to electronica, they KNOW how to get good sounds
out of there synth, they are not ashamed to use old Casios and Yamahas
"yamaha is probably the best seller there", while most American musicians I
know take it too seriously even if armatures and would rush out and buy the
most expensive gear, even if dead broke, maybe credit is easier to obtain in
the US vs. other parts of the world. Unfortunately, I belong to the latter
school and would not sleep if I don¹t have a logic controller by the day its
out even if that means I would have to get another credit card, starve or
steal one:)

Audi was a crap car for a long time too. And what about that Opal car
crap in the 70's.

On the other hand, although British cars and software are not doing so
well, its bizarre how many great British bands have come out considering
the relatively small size of Britain.

Definitely! What is it in UK culture that creates this foundation for so
many good artists?

To be honest, I think it's to do with the British 'class' system and
relative
poverty compared to some other countries. I lived in the UK for years
and I
know a lot of musos there. I found them to be more hungry, more
dedicated to
their cause. For many kids either football (soccer) or music is the only
way
out of obscurity and a low-income environment. They learn how to make do
with
what they've got too. When I was living there I was amazed by how good
some
bands sounded despite their crappy gear. We had a band over from Germany
at
one time, and they turned up in a brand new van the size of Scotland.
They
set up their Marshall cabs and rack mount guitar amps/FXs boxes, their
17-tom
drum kit, and strapped on their radio units so they could move around
the 3 x
3 foot pub stage - and they didn't sound any better (and their music
wasn't
any better) than their British support band that arrived at the gig in a
beaten up Renault Trafic van, along with their 50 Watt Torque bass amp,
a
horrible 70s Premier drum kit with a crash, a ride and a hi hat, etc.
The
drummer even kept the plate with his chicken legs and potato salad on
the
floor tom and ate in between songs, because he'd just got there from
work!!!!!

Cheers,

Recky

PS: Cars? What about Cortinas? They're legendary...and some of them are
still running!

thats funny- our drummer is allways the first back from the buffet with a
plate full of food, sometimes even before the end of the first set.......

The drummers I worked with were the first back with a plate full of drugs
or bottles of beer. They are not so much musicians as barbarians who have
luckily found some usefulness in beating things with sticks.

you must be referencing yer own own 'pals', there, as that sure doesn't
describe my drummer-friends.

Guess I must be not so much a musician as a barbarian, then, who has
luckily found some usefulness in beating things with sticks.

I don't do the drugs bit though. And I also don't drink. And I keep food
well away from my gear too. Lotta good instruments died a slow painful
death that way. A friend of mine pretty much had to give his sitar a
funeral when a big pot of goulash got dropped on it. Nasty business.

Nothing to do with being working-class (although he was), one of my old
drummers would often disappear mid-song to get a beer at the bar, leaving
the flabbergasted band to muddle through alone. He'd normally get back in
time to count in the next number. The funny thing was that no-one ever
pulled him up about it. Scottish chap. Didnt last too long.

Best regards,
Adam P
