Apple and Emagic

2002-07-01 by Mark Lennox

It seems to me that APple are making a move to become a second Microsoft :).
They seem to be heading toward offering an OS that contains all the
'multimedia' tools you might ever need (at least light versions of them...).
Thing about iMovie/Final Cut Pro, the Cd burning programs etc. Now we are
going to have a situation where Apple will be offering a basic sequencer
package (my bet is on iTrack as the name) and then a super duper version
which is equivalent to Logic Audio Platinum.

Am I just paranoid or what do ye think?
Do you think this is a 'Good Thing(tm)' or not?

I think Apple is doing what they have to do to keep going.

look at Quicktime - a great wrapper for multimedia - cross platform
etc - can't make headway in the pc world because MS comes up with its
own competing formats.

then look at the once "big" Apple apps - various Adobe, Digidesign,
Avid and so forth all migrating to pc in the post windows world...
worse than that: many of these apps develop and release for pc
_first_.

I think that Apple did the right thing in purchasing Astarte, Final
Cut, Sound Jam etc and bringing them into the fold. All of these are
getting regular development at Apple and not being relegated to some
back corner of a big pc software house.

I think Emagic was in trouble so this is good for both companies.

That said the future looks cloudy for Logic pc users - and that is not good.

Except they are doing it without forcing people to buy the stuff with the OS,
or making it exteremly inconvenient for those using competeing products. If
Apple integraded the new Logic program into the OS and added the cost to the
OS, it would be unfair to MOTU and other competitors.
