Newsgroups do not force people to download every posting, so cannot be
compared to this mailing list in the context of moderation.

Seems irrelevant to me whether you "delete" an email message without 
reading or "mark as read" a newsgroup line. The only difference is the 
few moments spent fetching mail from the server. Even on dial-up this 
time is hardly worth comment. I don't think anyone is forced to do 
anything they don't want to in either case.

On the main LUG I may read the first message in a thread - if the 
subject doesn't interest me I delete the entire thread. Its very easy 
to do. If a subject is repeated often enough, for example I am no 
longer interested in reading LAW posts - its trivial to create a filter 
that directs all those messages to the trash - that way you never see 
them.

Guess my point is that is well within everyone's power to moderate 
themselves.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
