Waves or UAD-1

Waves or UAD-1

2003-05-29 by msjones4th

Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting one of those two but I can't decide. I need to
hear some opinions as far as the two. Being a student, I found a
really great academic price at www.computersandmusic.com for Waves
Native Gold. $600 for that, puts it at the same price as the UAD card.
What I wuld use waves for is the C1, C4, L1, Q10, Ren Comp and Ren Eq.
Not a big Reverb or Delay user, so Logic's plugs do that job for me.
But on the UAD, you have the LA-2A, 1176, Pultec, and Cambridge. I'm
having a hard time deciding. Any thoughts?

Anothere concern is my desire to move to OSX, but I'm not going
anywhere until PSP MixPack and Vintage warmer are there with me, along
with Phatmatik Pro, Stylus and Sampletank. Waves is OSX VST, but UAD
is OS9 only, but both have promised AU in the near future.

I find that I usually hit the processor speed brickwall and have to
start freezing/bouncing (when will emagic implement a bus freeze? that
would be nice) about halfway thru mixing with the PSP and Logic plugs,
so waves I know would really bring my system to its knees whereas the
UAD would help, but I can upgrade my QS733 to a dual 1.33Ghz if budget
permits.

Which way would you guys go?

AW: [L-OT] Waves or UAD-1

Hi,

the "big" UAD-1 plug-ins sound like the real hardware units they emulate.
The others are similar in sound, and the reverb is among the best available
in software. You would buy the UAD-1 for its musical compressors and EQs.
You won't get some of the specialised facilities of the Waves bundle, such
as the L1. The Waves EQs are much more surgical. The Ren EQ sounds very
"analogue". It's up to you - two totally different beasts!

Cheers,

Recky

UAD 1.

Hands down.

Why?

Both quality and price performance.

Starting with just price/performance with UAD 1 you get the plugs
*and* the power to run them and leave your CPU free to run other
plugs at the same time. With Waves all you get are some CPU hungry
plugs that may tax your CPU to the limit.

Then there is the quality issue. Woves compressors are nice but the
UAD smokes them in the opinion of just about everyone who has ever
put them side by side. Then there is the reverb. In the past like
you I was not a big reverb fan, in fact I hated reverb. The reason,
I discovered recently, was not that I did not like reverb but that I
did not like shitty reverb and, with the exeption of altiverb which
is great but which smokes your CPU, native reverb is, I am sorry to
say, shit. RealVerb which is what you get with the UAD 1 utterly
smokes any native reverb and will probably change your attitude
completely about using reverb in the mix.

I must say that waves has some very good points too. Like an
excellent very GUIs on the C1 and C4 they are very flexible and
informative.

Also what really has a lot of people pissed of at UA right now is
their sssslloooooooooooowwwwwwwwww motion when it comes to making an
audio units version of their product. Inexcusable IMO.

Which one?

I own both so I'll tell you:

UAD-1:

Pros:
- very cool and it emulates the real boxes perfectly (almost!)
- the LA2A and 1176LN are woth the cost alone!
- The Pultec is lovely
- Nigel is perfect
- sound is "mean and bad"... it's not cold and surgical

Cons:
- some software problems arise (always in my experience with 4 friends),
hopefully fixed in version 3.1 due in a few days
- latency if used in a bus in Logic
- RealVerb Pro is my opinion all but a pro reverb... it doesn't sound like a
good digital reverb neither emulates something.. it's hard to work and find
out useful setting for me (on drums, vocals and so on), although is a
perfect generator for ambience effects!
- AU version on X: when? who knows!

Waves:

Pros:
- a lot of plugs for the price
- they are always useable in some manner
- I find C1, C4, L1 and Q10 very good but "cold"...
- Renaissance Compressor is a good alternative as a compressor
- I like Renaissance Reverb, do not work with presets but modify them...
esmpecially the Var parameters and the EQs and damping...
- The special effects (mondo mod etc...) are not so special
- The pitch shifter is... what should I say? unuseable...
- The delay is cool and good soundign (no comparison with psp84 and pcm42
though!)
- soon to be ready for AU

Cons:
- they cost a lot for what they offer (compared to UAD-1)
- no vintage emulation (Ren EQ sounds fake to me and is suibject to a lot of
band rejection - resonance - something not really well emulated in my
opinion in confront of UAD-1)

Hope this helps!

Best,

Simone Coen

So I think I was really asking which one to get first, because all you
guys are making valid observations and, to an extent, I asked for
opinions. However, $600 is a lot of money for a man with a nagging
fiancee and a child on the way, so it may be a year after I get one
before I get the other.

So I guess that the UAD will help me more, with it being a more
musical tool. And when I decide to put an exacto knife in the toolbox,
I'll get waves. But.... On the other hand... However...

Hey I'm a Libra, whaddya expect?

Thanks for your observations guys!

More on UAD-1

2003-06-07 by ronniewibbley

Following on from the recent "Waves vs UAD1" thread, I wondered
whether those of you using UAD1 on Logic (preferably PC version)
could comment on various reports from the UAD forum of problems with
the setup, particularly with the delay compensation not working as it
should.

From all the comments about the UAD1 it sounds like just the thing
for me, but in your expert opinions is it a viable combination with
LAW?

Secondly, it seems to be the general opinion that the reverb is not
the strongest part of the package - in your experience how would this
compare with , for example, Logic's own Platinum Verb (which
personally I've never got on well with)?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

TIA

Ron
