If I upgrade from a 28k modem to 56k what speed increase is likely?

56/28 = 2, so a factor of 2. If at all possible you should try to
get a broadband connection. I just switched from 56k modem to cable.
I pay 30 euro per month for unlimited high-speed access (8-10 times
the speed of the 56k modem), and my phone-bill is 50 euro per month
lower, so I actually save 20 euro per month. Now, if that isn't "the
best of both worlds", I don't know what is :-D.

I already realise the math. I was hoping for a reply in the tone of real
world experience as it is sometimes different to the math. Is this right.
Cheers.

With modems and broadband the math pretty much works as you'd expect.
Twice the speed is twice the speed. So it's not the same as with
computers, where a double clock speed doesn't necessarily mean double
perceived speed.

Hi Roman - in Auckland you'll be struggling to connect at 56k reliably
and hold the connection. Most of the time you'll find that about 44k
is the reliable limit, with occasional faster connects. Real-world?
Expect it to be maybe 50-70% faster on average. You won't notice a
huge difference.

If you're looking at a hardware purchase anyway, and if your budget
can stretch a little, I _really_ advise looking into the Jetstream
ADSL home option. From that, you can expect maybe 5x the download
speed of a 56k modem. It's always connected (no dialling), and you
don't tie up the phone line.

Alternately, the Woosh! wireless service is an interesting recent
arrival on the scene, at similar cost and speed to the Jetstream home
service.
