[LUG] [OT] Funky mic technique, you never know...

[Note from admin: please use the Logic-OT list to carry on
this off topic thread, thanks! ]

I've taken some time off from producing others to
focus exclusively on my own stuff for a while. What I'm
digging the most is taking the time to experiment with
no regard for the clock or other people's impatience.

Here's one: recently I began laying some final vocal tracks,
and the combo I like best on my voice is Manley pre->
Soundelux U99. The thing about the Soundelux is that,
while it's modeled after a U67, I want a bit more of the
tube 47 on the top, less aggressive, more slurry.

So I'm playing around with patterns and placement and
at some point, probably after an indulgent bong hit,
I came at the mic in a very odd way and ended up being
floored with the results. I had the capsule pointed 90
degrees to the right, with the mic about 1" diagonal
to the left of my lips. This put me extremely close to the
diaphragm (husky low mids) but being straight off
to the side of the cardioid pattern softened the sibilances
in exactly the way I was desiring.

Singing "past" the mic like this also eliminated any and all
plosives from hitting the diaphragm, which I hate because
I like to print with 4-6db of opto limiting on the way in,
and big P's hitting an opto is not pleasant.

Alright, enough rambling, I'm getting back to the music.

Take care,

Interesting, I have experimented around with similar positioning with
a Brauner VM 1, and found the results very useful, particularly with
a singer who has difficulty controlling sibilance. I do notice
though, that vox recorded this way are more difficult to bring up in
a loud, full sounding mix, they are better suited to a quiet, ballad
style tune. I don't know the sounddelux mic, are we talking cardioid
pattern?

Must try the variation with the bong ;-).
kind regards

ya... good one Ubik...
I use that technique too.

Also, a good one:
for a singer with an acoustic guitar, try pointing a cardiod mic up
at their chin so they're singing across the mic and another
cardiod mic, just under/next to that one, down at the guitar,
preferably, in my experience, away from the soundhole sort of
facing down on the upper shoulder of the guitar that rests on the
leg of the player. You'll get great separation, no phasing if the
mics are close enough to each other and no siblance. Yeehaw.

Hi to all on this beautiful list!

Got a DP867 OSX 10.24 and on start up my clock

goes to default. I changed the battery but still back to default. It sure worked in my 603 when my clock stopped working then? It must be something OSX'sh...

                                          Thanks in advance,

                                                                      darin
