??? I'm not going anywhere. This archive is just in case the Yahoo
Groups servers all simultaneously explode, or for anyone that wants
to do off-line searching through all the messages.

then perhaps you wouldn't mind making it available in a format that
wasn't so pc specific.

StuffIt can extract .tar.gz files, can't it?

I'm using that format because a) the emails are "harvested" on a Linux
computer, and that's the native archive format.. it's not a
Windows-specific format. Since OS X is UNIX based just like Linux, it
wouldn't surprise me if it came with the tools needed to uncompress the
file. And b) the compression it provides is better than any other program.
It doesn't matter so much for smaller lists like Logic-OT, but the
Logic-users archive with 119,000 messages is *huge*, and no other program
can compress 297 megabytes down to 43. I tried with WinRAR (which is the
best compression program I've found in Windows) and it only compressed it
down to 55 or 60 megabytes if I remember correctly.

I'm using that format because

a) the emails are "harvested" on a Linux computer, and that's the native archive format.. Also, both Windows and Macs are PCs (personal computers), so posting it in a non-pc-specific format would make the archive useless for everyone. Finally, since OS X is partly UNIX like, just like Linux is, it wouldn't surprise me at all if OS X came with a built in tool to uncompress this type of file.

b) the compression it provides is better than any other program. It doesn't matter so much for smaller lists like Logic-OT, but the Logic-users archive with 119,000 messages is *huge*, and no other program can compress 297 megabytes down to 43. I stand corrected - it can do this.

All very true - my apologies. I misread "rar" for "tar" when I made my
previous post.

Used to use that - but it seems stuck at ver 2.5 something - I believe
it is no longer supported.

In any case it had trouble running under os later than 9.0 and does not
at all understand the newer rar format (since ver 3) which abandoned
the .r01 .r02.....s.xx etc file extension format.

Stuffit also does not understand the current rar format.

There is a simple unRAR utility that runs under osx but I have not
tried it.

Too bad, rar is a very useful compression scheme, great for mulitmedia.
Hope someone ports a full implementation to osx before long.

I think rar was efficient enough that emagic had no great reason to
continue with Zap.

as an experiment I tried compressing audio files with both - and there
was little difference between the two.

MacRAR solves that little problem.

That's bad news. Someone else might step into the breech with updated Mac
support perhaps .

I still use 2.9

Yes the compression achieved by WinRAR is usually impressive although there
are more efficient algorithms for audio files.

I once used Shorten to decompress some archives of piano samples. The
compression ratios were quite spectacular. It is worth bearing in mind that
piano samples with long decays would be highly compressible because the
last half or more of the sample has quite low amplitude. Shorten is free
for personal use but is not available on the Mac.

Here's a link to Shorten and there is some discussion on the site of the
relevant issues.
http://www.softsound.com/Shorten.html

Just checking on the web site it seems possible that the lossy mode had
been used because the compression ratios were large (in lossy mode Shorten
can achieve 3:1 to 5:1 and about 2:1 in Lossless mode.

Murray

Atari) runs the site below --

Come on HJ, you are usually quite clever in your comments. Bush is not a
cuddly puppet, he is an idiot - although he is easily manipulated by the
rightwing Christian coaltion, pro-Israel lobby. He is not able to understand
anything techno nor technical more than flipping channels on the tv. What
better qualifications for starting an unprovoked war that will set a terrible
precendent for decades to come?

Sorry but I don't see how that video is at all related to Bush and
the unfortunate situation in Iraq.. ??

Oh, I didn't watch the video at all. "Muppet" just reminded me of
Bush, etc. Nothing too deep to it, really.

And to Tazmanian: no, Bush isn't a cuddly toy, I know. But hey, you
wouldn't call Miss Piggy cuddly, now, would you? :-)
