Hi Bill,

I agree the Oki parts are nice BUT, it is my understanding that they
cost approx. the same amount without Flash as the LPC2104 with Flash.
Adding an external bus to the LPC2100 and staying in a similar price
range with flash is what I expect from Philips and in this case
Philips will have the small devices (microcontroller) and the devices
with the external bus. However, I do agree, the Philips portfolio
needs these additional devices to cover applications with larger
memories or memory mapped I/O. There are a couple major shows coming
uo, may be there will be announcements. First the Embedded World in
Nuremberg, then the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. If
neither triggers official announcements and availability of
documentation, I will give the OKI device another close look but until
then I want to believe the rumors that the external bus devices are
due very soon.

Cheers, Bob

My response became merged with the comments about the Oki parts. I was
commenting on the to-be-announced Philips ARM with external address & data
bus. Anyway two additional comments for now.
1) The Oki parts look nice for ARM7 projects like uClinux because of their
SDRAM controller, (and relatively low cost). In my mind, their one significant
drawback is the somewhat slow clock speeds. I understand thay operate in the
25MHz range. The new NetSilicon part looks prettry nice along that line.
SDRAM controller, internal ethernet, less than $20USD in low volume & less than
$10 in moderate volumes. However, docs, availablility, and support could be issues
for both vendors.
2) I talked with my Philips guy yesterday and he assured me there was no problem
in letting the group know that the LPC2212 & LPC2214 are real and will be formally
announced soon. I have a pre-release of the user guide (sorry, don't think I can share
yet), and have silicon samples in hand. I also have an eval board in fab which should
be back by the end of next week. Once I get the bugs out, I plan to make it available.
The eval board has:
1) LPC2214 (external busses plus same perpherials as the LPC2114)
2) 256K of 32-bit SRAM (capable of 1MB)
3) DB9 serial port connectors, 1 for host, 1 for MODEM
4) 20-pin JTAG connector
5) external, battery backed RTC (i2c)
6) CompactFlash connector - memory mode & i/o mode capable
7) CS8900 10BaseT ethernet controller
8) expansion connector with power & unused LPC signals for future piggyback board
9) fits into a 5"x5" PacTec box
10) PB switches for RESET & BOOT LOAD
Because of the complexity of the design and working on it is not my pay-the-bills
job, I'm not real sure when I will be able to turn the board loose in the world.
Hopefully soon.
