> > Anyone any comments on ARM inc purchasing Tricend? > It is an interesting development... when I mentioned in '96 that the number of off-the-shelf microcontrollers available could be counted on the fingers of one foot (ok, there were a few), I was told ARM doesn't design complete microcontrollers for licensing because that's where semiconductor partners add in their value - with their own peripheral sets targeted at the markets they are strong in. Of course, ARM's design consulting group has always put together complete solutions that are available off the shelf, working with semiconductor partners, for example the ARM7100 used in Psion 5, StrongARM 1100, and ARM7500. The Triscend deal does seem to up the ante however, bringing in microcontroller-specific architects. I wonder how it will sit with SP's like Philips and Oki who have their own general-purpose microcontrollers? I noticed that the CEO of Triscend is Reynette Au, who I presume is the same Reynette Au who was marketing director of ARM a couple of years back. Coincidence? You be the judge ;) Peter.
