RTC problem in 2136

RTC problem in 2136

2006-03-22 by Pandurang Shinde

Hi,
I am using LPC2136.I am facing some RTC related problems in few boards. I am writing some value in RTC on power on but it is not incrementing.
This type of problem is not in all board but few of them. Some board work without any problem.
I also observed that when i use jlink for debug ,value of RTC register(SEC,MIN etc) are incrementing ,but these increment are slow. When i come out of debug & send data on serial port ,i have getting 0 data continously.
I have also check VBAT voltage which found ok.
Please help me ,if any one can.

Regards,
Pandurang S.

Do you use an external crystal? Have you checked the oscilator pins
for a 32 KHz wave?

thanks for immediate reply.
Yes i am using external watch crystal of 32 khz. I have also found that i am not getting oscillation on that board(the board in which i am not getting RTC updaed value ). But when i used same crystal on other board it( crystal ) seems working,so crystal is fine.
What are the possible reason that i am not getting oscillation with working crystal

Are you *sure* the leads are properly soldered to the pads? Remove any flux,
it might be conductive. Chip might be faulty.

hi,
       Thanks once again.
       Chip might be faulty.
Is there is any chance of this thing.
Because out of 50 boards i am facing this problem on nearly
more than 5 boards.

Pandurang S.

I could understand it with one board, but it's *very* unlikely with five
boards. Those 32 kHz crystals can cause more problems than the
high-frequency ones. - the feedback capacitors might need to be altered for
the crystal characteristics (load capacitance and series resistance) and
stray capacitance with your layout.

That sounds like a manufacturing problem more than an engineering
issue. In your situation, assuming the circuit is designed correctly, I
would carefully inspect the boards visually under a microscope to see
how clean the solder joints are. I have seen boards which were not
properly reflowed leaving debris around the pins: tiny little clusters
of solder balls which have not melted properly nor have been cleaned off.

I had one manufacturer have me inspect some boards they had gotten from
the assembly house which did not run. Again, it was a small but
significant number of boards. Under a 20X microscope, you could clearly
see the solder debris which was shorting pins out. The debris was
between the pins and back inside from the end of the leads: poor job of
reflow + cleaning.

I have had issues with 32 khz crystals when there are digital signals in the
area of the crystal. make sure you have ground plane protecting the crystal
pins

Hello,
You can try the following:
@ RTC init, clear all RTC registers --> (write 0 to all)
than make sure, you do not write the 'reserved' bits, this can cause
something like that to happen.. I had sort of the same problem.. and
the earlier mentioned steps solved my problem!!
Good luck!

RE: [lpc2000] Re: RTC problem in 2136

2006-03-25 by Pandurang Shinde

hi,
thanks for suuggestion,i check my initlization & i nowhere found that i am writing one reserved bit.
My RTC initlization routine is as below.

CCR=0x13; /* Reset the clock ,clock from external osc,RTC enable*/
       ILR=0x03; /* Clear the RTC Interrupt  */
       CCR=0x11; /* RTC reset changeed to 0 */
       CIIR = 0x01;  //interrupt on Second counter

Regards,
Pandurang S.

Hello,
You can try the following:
@ RTC init, clear all RTC registers --> (write 0 to all)
than make sure, you do not write the 'reserved' bits, this can cause
something like that to happen.. I had sort of the same problem.. and
the earlier mentioned steps solved my problem!!
Good luck!
