It is hard to tell from the picture what type of chip it is.
I just built a board this weekend that has the FT2232C going to an
LPC2219.

Still if it were a time is money issue, the time I spent designing and
building my board is more than what the Macraigor would have cost me.

Hopefully I will be soon releasing our PyICE debugger under the LGPL
license, at least for the ARM7/9TDMI architecture. This is a set of Python
tools that convert GDB remote commands to ARM EmbeddedICE/RT instructions.

I am submitting this month an article to Circuit Cellar with PyICE
details for the usual parallel port interface. Our USB interface uses
FTDI's new FT2232C chip and allows both JTAG and serial communications.
Full details for both interfaces will be available at http://armoid.com/pyice.

BTW, the Python module for FTDI's direct drivers has already been posted
(for Windows) at http://armoid.com/pyusb. FTDI sent us a preliminary
release of the Linux driver so we are also working in the Linux version.

  Stay tuned. Regards.

I was looking at it from the point you can get a
board and jtag debugger like the IAR kickstart with Jlink
debugger (usb) from almost half the price
and Keils board and ulink debugger for around $50 less.
(Going off Australian distributors prices)

Okay, there are code size restrictions
with the keil and iar ides. And when debugging.

Sounds promising.

I really don't know. However I expect to put the files --source code plus
schematics-- on the web site before the article gets published (... if I am
lucky enough -- we are under an enormous pile of work providing ARM
services for current and upcoming ARM chips ;^)

  Yep. Awesome chip ;^)

From Philips/Cirrus/Atmel/Analog/ST/Sanyo/Sharp/Oki... MCUs, to SoCs like
Qualcomm/Broadcom/Samsung's..., ARM seems to be taking over the universe.

Or use the Nohau USB arm jtag unit... I got one last year (think it was
about $1k). So more expensive but it's a nice integrated unit. Works
very well.
