Lpc2000

Hi,

I'm a complete newbie with arm development, previously I've been using
maxim TINI java embedded systems and Micrchop PICs.

I now want to switch to arm and plan to buy the following components:

Olimex LPC-P2148 PROTOTYPE Board
Olimex ARM-JTAG DONGLE
Rowley CrossWorks for Arm 1.5

Is this a good selection to start with?
I want to do usb and mmc card programming as well as interfacing with
sensors and pwm servos.

Btw, why is the Olimex JTAG dongle so cheap and others are extreamly
expensive?
What does the $199 Kail ULINK-LPC2000 JTAG Debugger on www.lpctools.com
better than the Olimex one?

Hi,

I am writing this e-mail on a Laptop that does not have a parallel
interface. The Keil U-Link has a USB to JTAG converter, the Olimex
connects to the parallel interface.  There are many so called
"wigglers" out there connecting to the parallel port, there is much
more soft- and hardware development required to generate a USB to JTAG
device like the U-Link (or the J-Link for that matter).

As for the Olimex board, it has been around for a while and seems to
be fairly stable. 
Other boards you can look at are the

or http://www.newmicros.com 
The shipping can already become a significant part of te purchasing
price depending where you are located ;-)

by the way, if you want to use the Rowley tools, you want to use a
wiggler because the USB to JTAG are more specific to the tools of the
manufacturer, U-Link goes with Keil, J-Link with IAR.

CrossWorks ("The Rowley Tools") works well with the Segger J-Link for
many customers.  We do, however, offer our own fast, cheap (£99) USB to
JTAG adapter but you can use a wiggler if you want to.  The Segger unit
is not targeted to any one toolset per se, but IAR do seem to have a
preference for that particular device.

IAR can use the j-link as a licensing dongle. It apparently has some
kind of internal serial number that EmbeddedWorkbench can read...

I bought my boards at Embedded Artists.
They deliver their boards with a CD that contains everything you need to 
get up & running in no time.
Gnu-arm tools and datasheets of all components, complemented with a 
quickstart manual that explains how to setup the whole thing.
What I specificly like on the boards is that these are all (almost all) 
standard modules that you can plug into your own project.
For development they have a Prototype board with some I/O and a fairly 
large prototype area, I ordered some of these but don't have those today 
- you will have to wait a bit longer for real user info and photos

So start telling your friends how great these lpc21xx controllers look 
and order more boards in one go, just ask for more serial number 
certificates so you will all have access to the Embedded Artists support 
site ;-)
Just too bad that VAT in Sweden is 25% - still I found these board cheap 
for what I got delivered.

on one of three things: node-locked to PC host
hardware, locked to a separate USB dongle (not
a J-Link), or a networked license server.

I got this from an OKI representative at a recent class. IAR was
supposed to have someone there but he didn't make it.

I was hoping they did use the j-link this way because that seems like
a great idea. That makes it easy to move the license around when the
board moves around.

I don't use ARMs yet on the job, so its unlikely this will matter for
me personally anytime soon. I just play with ARMs on my own and I
can't afford commercial tools for a hobby...
