The Roland kicked butt. I had an RE-201 for years, wish I still did. It is much more hi-fi than the echoplex, and had a much longer length tape which lasted longer. I think the echoplex could do longer delays, however, cause you could move the head farther from the record head. The Roland also had a spring verb unit as a bonus. Be careful buying an old mechanical tape unit - the heads are probably no longer replaceable, and you'll have to make your own tapes when they need replacement. Use a tape with a heavy backing. I'm not familiar with the Vox, so I can't speak about it.
