Creating Interesting waveforms ( was FM Synthesis w/ MOTM)

Creating Interesting waveforms ( was FM Synthesis w/ MOTM)

I was hoping to get into the DX type FM. So you're saying that DX
FM uses through-zero waveforms that actually reverse the phase of
the carrier signal, and MOTM VCO's will not reverse, so I can't do
that kind of FM?

My explorations into FM thus far usually yield waveforms that for
lack of a better work, suck. I usually end up pulling out the patch
chords and going back to the good ol sawtooth.

Anyone have any suggestions for creating interesting waveforms or
cool FM patches with their MOTM?

Go to www.synthtech.com/news

scroll down a bit, listen to the Robert Rich 'Live' MP3. It's got killer FM marimbas! All MOTM.

The secret is:

a) use Linear FM on a '300
b) use Sine or Triangle waves only (FM input and VCO output)
c) Use a fast, enveloped sine wave as the FM input

Another waveshaping technique that is not FM, but is very cool with a VCA
and single VCO was posted to the list about a year ago by Elhardt I think.
Ken, was that you? Anyhow, you use one wave from a VCO (lets say the sine)
as the CV for a VCA. Another wave from the same VCO is the signal through
the VCA. The output wave on the VCA can be shaped by varying the gain of
the audio control signal (and offset too) if you use a mixer. Many
interesting waveforms can be created using this simple patch.

Another nice FM modulation technique is to feed up to 6 sines into an 830
mixer, then output into another 300 VCO's linear FM in, then TRI out into
std VCF->VCA chain. Once you adjust the VCO freqs just right it sounds
quite nice.
