more than one power supply

more than one power supply

2002-12-03 by Nathan Hunsicker

Hello everybody, if I’m running more than one MOTM-900 or an 900 and a 950, how would I go about connecting them? Should they be run completely separate from each other? Should they be paralleled? Should a parallel only the grounds? If I run half my modules on one supply and the other half on another, am I going to encounter any problems when patching modules powered by different supplies? I’ve modded my current MOTM-900 with a HBB15-1.5-A for a little more power, but I think I’ll need a second PS soon. ̵1;Nate

I'll take a stab at these. Differing opinions are welcome and appreciated

LH: The outputs should never be paralleled.

Should a parallel only the grounds?

LH: I expect that if you have properly grounded the chassis of each module
that no other commonality between power supplies is needed. However, the DC
ground gets paralleled the first time you plug in a patch cord. So, a
common ground between the supplies on the DC side probably won't hurt a
thing.

If I run half my modules on one supply and the other half on another, am I
going to encounter any problems when patching modules powered by different
supplies?

LH: That has never caused me any problems.

LH: might as well buy 3. Face it, your addicted. :)

Larry (who has 2 power supplies at 5.0 amps each) Bring on them modules. :)

Hi Nathan -

I run two 900's independently and interconnect the modules with no
trouble whatsoever. I plan to add a 950 to this, too. My limited
understanding says that because the modules are all grounded in the
same way, grounding is not an issue. I have the two power supplies
plugged into the same source (power strip) to avoid ugly buzzes.
