uSeq knob/button placement

2002-12-05 by Paul Schreiber

It has been suggested to 'mirror image' the 2 LED displays with the 2 control knobs. Logic being
that right handed folks won't obstruct the display when entering data.

My reason for putting them on the left side is that if you playing a keyboard with your right
hand, the left hand is for tweaking/patching. I thought that while playing live, most folks
(being right-handed) would more than likely have their left hand free during the performance.
That is why START/STOP buttons are on the far left-side column.

Thoughts?

I do like the idea of moving the GATE buttons to the right, although I think it makes sense to
put GATE1 above the GATE 2 button, at the far right column.

Since I am right-hand dominant traditional with a keyboard, so this fits
with me. However, I would like to hear from others that are not
"traditional"- there may be a reasonable alternative that is not geared
towards one "type".

I think what makes sense is to orient the GATE buttons with the GATE
jacks. If GATE1 jack is above GATE2 jack then GATE1 button above GATE2
button makes sense. But if GATE1 jack is the left neighbor of GATE2 jack,
then align the buttons the same way. I think it is easier to associate
pots, jacks, buttons (whatever) that have the same horizontal or vertical
alignment than to orient them perpendicularly (as in the 440 mixer pots
and input jacks).

Does the MIDI IN have to be on the front panel?

Everything I have comes through the back of my rack. It just seems
like a big wort to have it on the front. I would have to take
something from the back of my rack and feed it around to the front and
it would be in the way all the time. Even if I had a standalone
cabinet I would want to route it through the back. I can't see any
use for it on the front unless you were going to constantly repatch
MIDI like you would audio/cv.

I had the same feeling.

This is the same reason I'm trying to rig a 1u front panel power switch for
the '900 and leave the '900 mounted on the back of the cabinet. The power
cord on the '900 to me shouldn't be sticking out of the front of the case
either. To my way of thinking, the only cords that should be "up front" are
patchcords.

Just piping in.

It is my understanding that the midi in jack will be located on the
front and replicated on the back of the module along with a midi
thru.
Please keep the midi in on the front. Some of us have cabinets with
solid backs and getting access to rear connections requires bringing
them out to the front. (More Stooge Panels!)

I second that cry... having to turn my entire cabinet around to
plug/unplug a midi cable is a giant pain... they make those nice
switchcraft 12BL5M nickel din plus that would look nice sticking out
of the front panel of the modular. there's something about being able
to have the midi jacks on the front panels that makes this feel like
a complete system, rather than an analog synthsizer with a midi work
around. this is the whole reason i'd sell my 8 channel encore
expressionist for a 4 channel motm interface, total system
integration. -Nate

why not put it on the front & have a jumper block to take one out the back too? I'd rather have it in the back, because it'll basically stay where it is, and the last thing i need is more cable mess..... it's the same reason most people put their power supply in the back.
