850 pedal interface

850 pedal interface

2003-09-24 by chef_poireau

hi!
hope someone can help.

"The MOTM-850 interfaces Roland, Yamaha and CV-out pedals to other
MOTM modules. It provides 2 signals: a CV out that can be set with
RANGE and OFFSET controls to cover -7.5V to +7.5V with
varying 'sensitivity', and a GATE output."

which pedals does this interface exactly work with? could someone
possibly provide model number for the yamaha and roland pedals? and
what is a "cv-out pedal"? where can i get these pedals? which ones
are motm-like-quality?

are these pedals on/off-pedals, or do they provide a continually
changeable voltage (more like a guitar ahwah pedal?)

what exactly will the output of the 850 be - i was hoping to use this
thing with a filter to provide some wahwah-like effects. is this
possible?

thanks!

I use an Ernie Ball guitar pedal with my 850. It's a continuously
variable pedal. Plug it in to the 850 and I can generate a GATE
signal and a continuously variable voltage. Details and links to
sound samples can be found here:

http://www.tellun.com/motm/mods/motm850/motm850.html

I've used this with filters to create a wah wah pedal (see the last
sound sample at bottom of this page):

The MOTM-850 is a LOT of fun, highly recommended.

A 'CV-Pedal' is any pedal that outputs a voltage that you can then
use to control a module. CV = COntrol Voltage. For example,
stepping on a pedal connected to the 850 creates a voltage sweep that
you can connect to the frequency input of a filter for your wah-wah
effect. Connect it to a VCA for volume pedal effects, or to your VCA
for wild pitch bend effects (or not so wild: you can scale the
voltage out of the 850 for more subtle effects).

Scott is correct: it's a ton of fun!

thanks :)

download for fc-7 manual:
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi/english/synth/FC7E.PDF

can't find any precise info on the ev-5, though :(

Re: 850 pedal interface

2003-09-26 by chef_poireau

thanks to everybody who took the time to reply!!

apparently it matters what resistance the pedals have??

quote ernie ball's pedal faq:
"An expression pedal controls the amount of voltage that allows
certain functions, such as, delay, distortion levels, volume, etc. in
a keyboard or an effects processor to perform to whatever parameters
the user sets it up to do. Our pedal may work as an expression
pedal , but the manufacturer usually suggests what type of pot needs
to be used, 500k, 250k, 25k, etc. in a pedal, keyboard, or an effects
processor. The pedal might require a more sophisticated design,
contact the manufacturer to determine what type of pedal is
necessary."

the ernie ball pedals are available with different resistance values:
500kohm, 250kohm, 25kohm; and, according to the ernie ball website:
500 and 250 kohm is "suitable for the audio path of passive
instruments", and 25kohm "for the audio path of active instruments or
buffered effect returns".

greetings,
chef!

the yamaha fc-7 is rated at 50 kohm +-30%, if i understand their
manual correctly.

the roland pedal i have no info about (can't find it on their sites).

so: which resistance value do i need/want?

thanks, mike!

yes. now, if the pedal outputs a cv, then isn't it possible to
directly connect the pedal to an attenuator input of a filter, vca,
etc...
or:
what exactly does the 850 do? does it just convert the "voltage out"
of the pedal to a motm-compatible/useable range?

thnx!

Yes.

The 850 will allow you to scale the CV pedal output, invert it,
offset it, and generate a gate signal from it.

Fortunately, the 850 is very forgiving and seems to work with almost
any pedal you can throw at it. The 850 has a jumper that is used to
select your pedal's maximum resistance range (5K-15K, 15K-75K,
75K-150K). I use an Ernie Ball pedal that has two pots in it: one for
the pedal, the other to "warp" the pedal response. I can adjust my
pedal's maximum resistance from 0 to 125K with the "warp" control. I
have the jumper set to "75K-150K". My pedal is one of those that is
"suitable for the audio path of passive instruments" but it works
fine with the 850. Using the RANGE and OFFSET controls on the 850 and
the "warp" control on the pedal, I can get almost any range of
voltages out of the 850.

If I had to buy a new pedal, I'd go for the 25K model. The output
voltage will be quite a bit higher if you use the 250K or 500K
models. You can change some resistors in the 850 to work with those
models, but why bother if you can just get the 25K model.

p.s. Stooge Larry will probably have a lot to say about this topic
when he gets back.
