New shopping cart/ordering

2005-08-24 by Paul Schreiber

My ordering page stinks and I want to change it. It's very difficult
to add stuff and the shipping calculator is off.

Please visit these demo sites (no SW to load) and let me know what you think.

One is free, the other like $60.

http://phpmycart.com/demo_store/

and try

http://demo.oscommerce.com/

of if you have another suggestions (these are PHP/MySQL pages. There is
also this 'Ruby on Rails' thing but that phrase makes my head explode).

I think both of these are pretty good. I guess I'd vote for phpmycart
because its layout is less busy -- I don't care for the sidebars full of
come-ons and the giant "Categories" display in oscommerce, but
that is probably customizable when you set up your store. Generally
I prefer less gee-whiz in a store rather than more. Both of them
worked well for me and were convenient to use.

I did notice that phpmycart formatted my shipping address oddly,
but presumably that's a configuration choice too. What was that,
Canadian or something?

Re: [motm] New shopping cart/ordering

My wife Diana is a webmaster and recently started using the open source
Zen Cart for a bookstore:

http://www.zen-cart.com/modules/frontpage/

She is not a programmer, but found the Zen Cart easy to administer and
with very good support. Your questions are answered quickly.

You might want to inquire at Lunar Pages about hosting your ordering.
Lunar Pages provides Zen Cart. Diana works for a non-profit
organization with a small budget. The hosting cost can be as little as
$8.00 per month.

As for Ruby on Rails, it's a very hot database to web development
framework, based on the Ruby language. But you do have to be a programmer.

Paul, email me if you have more questions. Diana is happy to help.
Here is her bookstore on Zen Cart:

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
