MOTM-510 usage

MOTM-510 usage

2006-10-10 by Richard Brewster

I've enjoyed the discussion about the 510. I have not utilized mine
very well yet, and I think I know why. My approach tends to be
theoretical. I get an idea of what a module does by analyzing its
inputs and outputs, and I patch according to these preconceived ideas.
This approach does not work very well with the 510. The most
interesting sounds I have gotten from it have happened when I just
plugged in various signals and controls and twisted knobs. I had no
clear idea how it was making those sounds! So my suggestion is just to
play with it. Don't worry about understanding what it's doing. The 510
is not the sort of module that you use to create a preconceived sound.
It's for exploration and discovery.

About samples and patches, I'm interested in any and all that people
wish to post.

Thank you, Tom. These are interesting, even if I don't know what a
Roland JD-800 or a Korg EMX are. I am a little confused about the
patch.  You write, typically:

Audio: JD-800 -> MOTM-120 -> MOTM-510 -> MOTM-410
CV: MOTM-510 (full out) -> MOTM-410 (rate)

I know it is hard to describe a patch in words.

Does this mean that you are using the MOTM-510 Audio Out as the input to
the MOTM-410, and Full Out of the same MOTM-510 as a control input to
the MOTM-410? If that's the case, I don't understand it, because the
MOTM-410 rate input controls the rate of the internal LFO's. I'm not
sure what it means to control an LFO rate with an audio frequency
signal. Perhaps the modulating signal feeds through somehow. I'll have
to try it. (See, this is my theoretical mind, the mind that normally
does not think to modulate an LFO rate with a high frequency control.
In the case you modulate the MOTM-410 DEPTH with the 510 output, since
that is a VCA the control signal would mix through. But you only used
that with the TBE-Sound04.

Does it make much difference to the sound if you disconnect the MOTM-510
Full Out from the 410 CV inputs?

I *think* if I've read this right that the 510 is generating LFO speed
signals since it is being fed by the 120...?
