Module dividers

Module dividers

2000-09-28 by ixqy@aol.com

Greetings all,
Well, I found in the archives that others have also thought about "visually"
separating the various modules in their MOTM setups....

After calling around, I've made two trips to a local hobby shop and bought
about $20 of this plastic trim that is used for models. It's called
"Plastruct". Here's a site that has some pics of the various shapes offered:

http://www.piko.de/d/plastruct/s-plastruct.htm

I bought various shapes and sizes, but have found that none of them have
worked so far. One of the problems is that once I get to a big enough size to
fit the thickness of the MOTM panels, the part that is wedged in between the
modules it too thick, not allowing the modules to line up with the rack rail
mounting holes. (bummer!) For the Plastruct (U or H shape) pieces that are
smaller, they wont fit around the MOTM panel or they just fall off ("T"
shapes wedged between modules).

Anyway, I just thought I'd pass this info on to the list. It seems that one
of the size/shape combos should work for this purpose, I just can't figure
out which. Maybe someone else will have better luck than I did. : )

Has anyone had any other ideas or success in accomplishing this?

  Uhm.... bye.
(I never know what to write here!) : )

Those look really cool Andrew. Thanks for sharing. I would be more
inclined to think the "I" shape would work best. But, it looks like it
might be too thick like the others you tested.

This is a problem that I definitely intend to solve one way or the
other. I just have deferred working on it until I get my flat rails,
so I'll know how much gap I have to work with.

I was thinking about some very durable striping, like automotive pin
striping as an alternative.

Maybe not the classiest of all options...
I used a white marking tape to mark the edges between modules. It's
not
the best solution, but the tape color closely matches the silkscreen
paint and never yellows or falls off. The tape is actually a
polyester
film tape used in covering up marks on veloxes (those of you in
graphic
design or production will know what I'm talking about.) I get mine
from
a complany called Craig Cold Type Supply, their phone# is 1-800-543-
1191 is anyone is interested. When I get home, I'll snap a picture
with
the digitl camera, if anyone wants to see what it looks like. -Nate

I had previously tried ChartPak tape, but it peeled easily, and if
left on for years could separate and damage the paint - so I removed
it.

Plastictruct and ithe things can be fabicated and modified with heat and
files, Xacto, wizards, Dremels and 400 + - 1200 sandpaper. Hobby shops
have lots more things you can use and it is cheaper than art supply stores.

Wish I had time to try it. there are a lot of great approaches that
can be taken. Graph it out and do the fabrication calcs, it'll fly

Tandberg uses such things., theirs fall out.
Complements on the concept.
