I just came back onboard here and wondered why the photo of a guy playing a synth on a Mellotron group home page? :)

I got the reply about the pic, thanks....I was not aware Jon had passed away. I was friends with him on Myspace but never actually saw his photo...just his gear. --- In newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com, "Charles" <charel196@...> wrote:

Hello Mellotronlings!
I have been on something of a hiatus after selling EMI104S some three years ago (or more, it's hard to remember). I've found it very difficult to immerse myself in mellotronia, primarily due to intense jealousy and regret after having to sell for finacial reasons, something many of us can relate to.
But no more! I have just obtained M400 #376, a former Beatlemania touring tron belonging to producer Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., etc. and owner of the former Fort Appache Studios and the recently closing Camp Street Studios in Boston). I've had the pleasure of working on her on many occasions and when I heard Paul was closing Camp Street, I immediately placed dibs on it.
Although a bit rough around the edges, it plays beautifully with a stable SMS3 control board. I plan on giving it much love as it's been a touch neglected, and eventually a full ground-up restoration.
As any former tron owner could relate to, there has been a significant gap in my studio's arsenal, not to mention my tendencies toward tinkering. Somehow, I feel complete and felt the need to share.
It's good to be back.
Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome back, folks! Sodomized by whores? That's not much of a hazing.... The finish on ol' #376 is a tragedy. Apparently the Beatlemania touring guys would paint it with rollers every few shows to keep it white. So there are quite a few layers of paint covering the usual scrapes and gouges from load-in/load-out. It'll take some doing. It's also footless, which is frustrating. But it does play pretty well, though it'll better when I give it the standard tuneup. Even in it's current state, it's far more encouraging than my old EMI. At least the keys are straight. --- On Tue, 11/23/10, Mike Dickson <mike.dickson@gmail.com> wrote:

It's a Canadian tradition. Don't worry about it. Rick had to do it
and he's perfectly okay. Well. Moderately.
You say that your 'new' Tron has a 'weather-worn' finish? How bad? I
actually find that 'been around the block' look quite appealing.
Which brings as back to Rick.

Hi Bernie, Glad the rollers are working. Don't understand why the keys are hitting the lid now as the rollers will make no difference. The correct setting for the key back tension is to tighten the backnut until the keys just touch the bar and then add 1/8th turn only. Do not screw the backnuts down tightly. Re the M5000, we are having a progress meeting early next week to see where we are and I will then call you. We have made good progress but we are way behind as this year has been difficult for all involved just trying to stay ahead of the badtimes. Neither us nor Norm have been able to dedicate the time in an effort to keep the money flowing. We are so close it's frustrating! Best, Martin mellotronics.co.uk

Hi Martin, Thanks for the adjustment tip. I think that anyone who still has the original pinch rollers in their M400 really needs to exchange them for a new set. It's amazing what a difference they've made in mine. The pitch remains steady to the end of the tapes and the overall sound is much more even. Even the feel of the keyboard has improved. Jack - making new feet can be quite a rewarding experience, as you can raise the height that your tron sits at without doing much to drastically alter the profile of your machine.
Best of luck,
