M400 power switch

M400 power switch

2011-06-17 by benstuyts

Hi,

The power switch on my M400 is missing the red cap. It's still functioning otherwise, so I was wondering if that cap is available separately somewhere? If not, is the complete switch available?

Kind regards,
Ben

Ah, the red cap. As Frank told me when he was rebuilding my #525, they are just not readily available. I ran off saying, of course it must be. After all, Mouser catalog is what, ,like 2500 pages? No way it is not in one of those. Yes way. I think two or three folks in the world have them. Expect a nice uplift on that one if you can convince them to sell. Very rare it seems. Maybe one of our members will chime in if they have one to part with.

Regards,

Mr Neel's (#525) caretaker

Back when my switch bit the dust I replaced it with a flat Marshall-type illuminated rocker switch and it looked just fine.

I was afraid of that, I could not find it anywhere. So what kind of power switch is on the 'new' mellotrons these days then?

Kind regards,
Ben

When Professor Korb refurbished my M400 #872, he could not locate an original power switch as well. His solution was an elegant one- he used a lighted rocker type switch ala the Mark V. Looks great on my machine!

I am tempted to make a mold of the red plastic part and cast one under
pressure out of polyurethane-I'm guessing the originals were styrene but
maybe acrylic (possibly too early for that material, can't remember). I've
been making missing keys and other parts for my weird little collections
in this way so why not a switch top?

If you do you know you'll have a small guaranteed market for that part. If your capital outlay is small, or none, then I say go for it.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: M400 power switch

2011-06-20 by Tony

I've had my M400 since 1975, and I'd be unhappy if my red cap was lost or broken beyond repair, to put it mildly!
I have some experience in custom made plastic products, and I'm afraid they wouldn't be inexpensive at all, sorry to say.
For obvious reasons these folks like quantity (1000s), so, say run of 100 could end up costing $100 per at zero profit.
I'm all for the "for the cause, zero profit", but at $100 per, how many are missing, and how many would be willingto pay?
Love to be completely wrong about this, so please voice your opinion.

It's a Bulgin Switch. I thought Polyurethane was a foam. Acrylic was around in 1970, but yes, it could be a transparent polystyrene. Someone turned up about seven of these things on ebay a couple of years ago. They were the complete switch. It's the only reason I have a little red cap now. I think they went for between $20 and $25 each. If you could keep the cost low enough, I'm sure you could sell all you wished to produce.

I'm just saying that they'll all end up where they belong. I'm not implying
that with you they wouldn't as well. I don't hoard parts, I do try to
acquire them, but face it, there's more stuff moving through my shop than most.
Obviously, I can't touch Streetly, but they have far more inventory than I
do. My statement was to explain that I don't sell parts normally, I
install them.

In the spirit of the where's Bernie thread, how about 1 million handguns
to the UK for each m400 power switch. That will leave 250 million guns
in the US and plenty of power switches for us here in the States and our
friends up in Canada.

On a serious note, I have not checked the board for a few days and when
I saw all the traffic about Bernie, my heart skipped a beat and thought
the worst had happened.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
