I envy anyone who can play that well. I started learning in my mid fifties too late for this time around.

Thanks for this Mark.

As far as young people in your office go, I wouldn't place too much credence in what they think is good music.

Most (but not all) young people are subjected to the musical equivalent of a shovel full of sh*t and are conditioned by the 'industry' that it's cool music, and they blindly buy into it.

Heheh...no kidding Fritz.
I cannot stand some of the stuff these "kids" at work consider music.
But then, I'm an old foggie to them.

I've saw ELP twice in their hey day...frankly, I could have done w/o the floating, spinning end over end grand piano and flaming balls shooting from the ribbon controller.
But Keith could sure play that B-3 and synthesizer....

I didn't say all, I said a lot, but then again, I work in an ageist industry. I like a lot of the youngster's music, just not a lot of the youngsters....even my 20 year old son admits his generation has this annoying sense of entitlement.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Off topic: Next Moog

2013-01-13 by Bruce Daily

I saw ELP twice, too. The big Denver arena show in 1977 was truely overblown. I don't remember much, but the pictures help. Another show in the smaller Colorado State University basketball arena a few years later was wonderful. By this time ELP had re-grouped a bit, giving way to a tighter, more intimate show. Better variety, less bombast.

I hate the name "Phatty". I'm sure Moog could have come up with something better.. IE Prodigy 2 or whatever. "Phatty's 'orrible imo.
The synth though is great, I got it in red which matches the Nord rather well.

I just can't believe that after 40 years they can't design an instrument that improves upon the Mini Moog... Two oscillators? monophonic? 25 keys? Really?

Mellotron serial # dating.

Just wondering if there's a list out there. I have #1444 at the
studio, and would be interested in knowing it's approximate build date.

Thanks

Jim

Well, all the digits in the serial number add up to 11, and 1 and 1 is 2.
That has to mean something.

Same here interested, mine’s #510 and been under the impression it was a 1972 build.
Don’t think so now after seeing 1407 with a much earlier date estimate.

That was a joke, Tony. We've seen these build dates and purchase dates fluctuate all over the map, and unless Martin and John can find the list, I don't think we'll ever know for sure. I agree, just out of curiosity, it would be nice to know.

I need to find out #259.

If we all entered our serial numbers on this list at one time, we could get a better idea of what still exists and from what eras - (Streetly / Mellotronics / Sound Sales etc.) and also Martin wouldn't have to run back and forth to look these up.

What doth though thinketh?

Actually, the LP gets bad press in some quarters. But, name aside, I think it's pretty good. Having used it on the "Kracked Earth album, I would challenge anyone to tell the difference between it and a Minimoog. Just needs a bit of setting up to get the results, as the presets are pretty naff tbh.

Re: Mellotron serial # dating.

2013-01-14 by tron400

#500 has lived its life without proper birthday parties. I would love to finally give it one.

Any other history would also be nice to know. For instance, when I took #500 to Dallas Arbiter in the 70's, the guy that tuned it up said that he had seen it before and that it had been on a tour. I thought I was the original purchaser, but apparently not. I paid $2900 for it from a shop in Boston. It was in mint condition when I bought it, so I can't complain. I'd like to know who the original purchaser was and who it went on tour with.

Also, #500 has metal parts with #497 scratched off and #500 carved into them...in different "handwriting". I'm curious as to what ever happened to the real #497.

#390 here...bought in 73

If we all entered our serial numbers on this list at one time, we could get a better idea of what still exists and from what eras - (Streetly / Mellotronics / Sound Sales etc.) and also Martin wouldn't have to run back and forth to look these up.

What doth though thinketh?
