The best one I can think of is Simon House, on "D-Riders" from Hawkwind's "Hall of the Mountain Grill". there's this solo in it, played on one of the choral tapesets, I've never heard a tron break I like better. House is somewhat underrated among '70's keyboard players, I think, and that mellotron/heavy/gothic sound that Hawkwind had on that album and the one after it is very pleasing to me. It's a pity there's so little of it, really.

My vote goes to Fripp for his work on the KC album Lizard, primarily on "Cirkus" and the bolero portion of "Lizard". The sound is just magnificent. Too bad he stopped using the MkIIs after this album, even in the studio. (Too bad he stopped using them, period. I think a few mellotron parts would relieve the tedium that sets in because of the incessant guitar "chatter" in every song they currently do.) Of course for sheer majesty, you still can't beat "Epitaph". I listened to it last Christmas on someone's $80k stereo system with the volume set on Nuclear Meltdown. The owner of the system, who'd never heard it before, immediately went to his computer to order a copy of the CD. It knocked dishes off a shelf three rooms away and I will not repeat what his angry wife said to us. Rick

There are so many good ones that I couldn't pick just one, so I'll randomly pick one that doesn't usually get mentioned: In My First Mind from Steve Miller's album Children of the Future. I really like the way the Tron strings and Hammond sound together. Bernie

King Crimson have (in the 1969-1974 period) produced the most and best music with Mellotron. Out of their repertoire, I'd pick... Epitaph (ITCOTCK) In the Wake of Poseidon (ITWOP) Sailor's Tale (Islands) Starless (Red) The Fright Watch & The Talking Drum (The Night Watch) Barley Butsford & Exiles (CD3 on The Great Deceiver) Outside Crimson, then its Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog. EVERY track has Mellotron, and it's quality. Check out the vocals "...like a choir boy on speed..." There are many others I could choose, but a posting can only be so big! Nick, fae South Embra

The Mellotron player was one Doug Rayburn. The sleeve credits has him down as "Mellotron and Flute" only. Bill Bruford (ex-Crimson) drummed for Pavlov's Dog's 2nd album - "At the Sound of the Bell" on a session basis. The band are still on the go, but the tron(s) disappeared a long time ago. Nick

Dear Mr Smith, In these post modern days I should have said favourite. I can't really comment on technical ability, ( my piano playing is really coming on, but it is a bit counter productive for the tron) but he does seem to holding a lot of keys down with an amazing layering effect. I think it's very effective and Woolly is pretty much carrying the whole band. Without him there wasn't much left. Not common to hear the mellotron used as pretty much the lead instrument through out a song. Epitaph and the King Crimson use of tron sounds are pretty anaemic to my ears in comparsion. Haven't heard the Mellotron Song, I shall have to watch out for it. Surprised there wasn't more support for Mike Pinder, the second best tron player of all time. I'm a fan of Pinder's mellotron work with the moodies, though I won't stick my neck out and say he's the best. Tuesday Afternoon (Tenor Sax and Three Violins) and Watching And Waiting (M300B Strings?) are two high points for me. I Also love McDonald's work on Epitaph and COTCK. On the other hand, as much as I love Bowie, I'd have to say that his Tron playing on Big Brother from Diamond Dogs (what sounds like some kind of brass set played in a very staccato manner, not the eight choir and not the waivery trumpet)is some of the most wretched I've ever heard. johnbarrick PS - I haven't heard that much of Barclay, Mark, so I'm not really qualified to pass judgment on Wooly's playing. Their stuff is surprisingly hard to find here in the states. Mark Pring wrote:

Kings Garden... Is there a You tube link or sumptin'... where we can hear a sample... any links??? and doesn't it depend on what sound??? For the shortest and coolest...it has to be Paul McCartney and the flutes on Strawberry Fields... or is that tune retired...and/or am I fired from this list??? gotta agree thatKing Crimson is the REAL best for that... Best 'tron? Yes, I agree with all of the aformentioned, but my favourite is anything by Martin Kitkat (RIP) of Gracious!; especially the MKII smooth church organ/3 violins on 'Heaven' (1st LP) on his MKII Musicmaster double lead instrument. Great playing and "that sound". His sax/vibes/brass/violins on 'Blood Red Sun' (2nd album) is a close second. I'm surprised no one has mentioned any Wakeman stuff... I know the thread has moved from the best mellotron player to the best sounding mellotron player... I have to put in some votes for "And You and I", "Six Wives" and lots of "Tales..." Not great technically, but then again what is (amazing what you can do with 2 fingers...) Still, soothing to the ear... Wooly always gets a vote... as does Tony and "Selling England..." "But when you think of me tune in the frequency, Come out and play come out and play" ...Gandalf Murphy and The Slambovian Circus of Dreams "Nothing can change the shape of things to come." ...Max Frost "Any talent that we are born with eventually surfaces as a need" ...Marsha Sinetar ________________________________ From: tony1 <atm655@verizon.net> To: newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, November 21, 2008 7:59:54 PM Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] Best mellotron playing ever? OK, I'll bite... I like Wakeman's work on "Space Oddity". The atmosphere he created with the various 'tron voices always gets to me. It's a 1969 recording, probably utilizing a MK2 (did he ever record with one after this?). KC's "Epitaph" also gets my vote, along with Pinder's "My Song". While not a fan of reverb, I think the recordings on Tales are some of the sweetest tron IMHO.? I've always liked his chording. His synth/organ soloing is like my soloing, abysmal. Also a fan of Bank's tron work, again it's a combo of recording, chording, phrasing. Early Crimson rates high as well. ....and who can forget about the studio version of "Freebird".? I will NOT let that one die. fritz

Well I've always been a big fan of Pinder's playing, as well as Wolly, Mcdonald and even Fripp but these days Fritz's "Feeling of Far" (the whole thing) and Dickson's "Mellotronworks" I feel are astounding. As far as other past and present players they may be mediocre but I seem to like the tron on even the crappiest of songs. I love the sound of the things. Well, I concur on almost everything. Especially the bit about me being a Mellotron God. Not so sure about Doddy though. :-) As much as I may love the sound of the instrument, it CAN sound like shit in the hands of the unwary. 'Changes' by Black Sabbath is a fairly good place to start, where someone on a plate reverb with no idea of a Mellotron's attack is forever about a quarter beat behind the rest of the band. As for 'utterly out-of-tuneness' I can't see past Mannfred Mann's hit singles which seem to be written and played in about five microtonally different keys. At the same time.
