Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

2011-01-13 by raradna@gmail.com

Hey everybody, I am new here.

I just got an Oberheim Matrix 1000 to add some analog flair to my otherwise Yamaha-FM flavored arsenal.

I have Midiquest, and have been trying to use it with this synth, but I am having trouble communicating correctly with it. I have turned Midi Echo off, but still when I try to load the patches/banks to my computer, it acts as if it is working, but when it is done, all of the patches that came to the computer are a "default" patch, without names.
Selecting them does not change the patch number on the front of the unit.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is there some special trick to make this work? Please, any advice might help.

Thanks a lot
Rad

Hi Rad,

You have to name the patches in Midiquest. The Matrix-1000 does not have patch names. Midiquest will remember them once you name them. I do not believe that Midiquest can change patch numbers in the Matrix-1000. The patch you select will be loaded to teh edit buffer. The best way is build an entire bank and send it to the synth. Then the patches will be where you want them.

Let me know if you're still having issues. I can fire mine up and connect it to my midiquest PC and check things out for you. I also can send you a good sized MQ library already populated with named patches.

So, are you saying that it is normal for the patch that is selected from the front panel at the time of import to populate all 99 presets of the MQ bank? B/c that is what is happening for me. I just got the synth, so I was sorta hoping to load ram&rom to midiquest for quick auditioning/naming of everything. Were you able to change patches from within MQ? I feel like something is wrong here.

The library would be very helpful/appreciated, if you don't mind. I'm using MQ 10 XL on OSX, btw.

The M1000 has patch names.
It just can't display them. But it keeps them with the data as it's the
same data as the M6 and M6r.
Pulling the ROM patches from the unit will also reveal patch names.

At least it did on Opcode Galaxy. Dunno about MQ.

That sounds mysteriously like a program setting far more than a synth
setting.

some sort of 'send bank on select' vs. 'send patch on select' setup.

I think it's a setting in the matrix 1000. Look in the manual. Something like this happened to me once and it turned out to be something in the m1000 that was set up differently.

Re: [oberheim] Re: Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

2011-01-14 by Raphael Radna

Well, I know that Midi Echo has to be off on the Matrix for communication to work correctly, that was in the MQ "fast tips", but I have that off. Aside from that, I don't know of anything that needs to be set on the Matrix itself. If you can recall what it might be besides that (if anything), please let me know.
I thought maybe it was a sys-ex speed problem (you know how some of these old machines sometimes get confused by recent midi programs, etc.). But I tried playing with those settings in the MQ prefs (the ms-delay stuff), with no luck.
Thank you all for your help, For those of you out there using MQ with a Matrix-1000, have you ever had a similar experience?

Re: Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

You also have to make sure the overflow and grouping settings are turned off or the Matrix cannot send sysex properly. I'm not sure about the G1 thru G9 midi settings for midi guitar use. It's probably easiest to set the Matrix to midi channel 1 for starters.

Two more questions... When you select user patches 0-200 from the front panel do you hear different patches? I know this is a "duh" question but a dead battery can wipe these out. It seems like MQ would get jibberish for patches though. Can MQ play audition notes from the program?

I'll try to get mine powered up and check out using Midiquest to load and save patches this weekend. It's been a while since I played with an Oberheim in my studio. I've been playing with virtual analogs like the microKORG XL, Darkstar, and Micron. I should compare them.....

Re: Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

2011-01-14 by raradna@gmail.com

Ok. Well I'll describe what is happening the best that I can:

When I try to "get" Patch Bank 0 from the Matrix1000 in my MQ studio window, the program works normally. That gray window with the midi ports listed and progress bar at the bottom pops up, and it works for a little while, until it completes and gets the bank ("bytes received" for a Matrix1000 bank are about 27-28000).

Then the bank window appears, and there are 100 patches displayed, listed from 0 to 99,
and they're all named "BNK0:00" through "BNK0:99."

When I press a patch in MQ, the synth plays an audition note, but it is always the same patch, no matter which preset i select in MQ. The preset number on the front panel does not change either. If I change the preset manually (from the front panel), then all of the sounds in MQ become the preset that I changed to. If I press the button to show the patch's settings (edit window) in MQ, I can plainly see that they are all unique, so we know that MQ is receiving unique patch data.

Could the problem be then, that MQ is somehow failing to properly send program change messages? I hope I have explained this well. Let me know your thoughts.

Re: Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

2011-01-16 by narfman96

I got to play around with MQ and my Matrix-1000 today. I got lost in the punchy sound this synth has and jammed with it most of the day.

I can't get patch names from MQ even if I use MQ to send patches with names to it. However the same is true using SoundDiver, JSynthLib, or MatrixEd for editors.
> and they're all named "BNK0:00" through "BNK0:99."

Opening the editor in MQ sends the patch to the synth but does not change the number displayed.

I found the sysex implementation chart for the Matrix-6 and the first 7 bytes after the header should be the patch names. The data is in 6 bit ASCII form so I can't tell what it should be if there was a name there. Can anyone tell me how to read this from the sysex file. I did try denibblizing it to 134 bytes and still can't figure it out. Since I don't have a Matrix-6 I would like to see an actual dump from a bank that has patch names.

I'm now convinced your Matrix-1000 works just like mine... Fran

If I press the button to show the patch's settings (edit window) in MQ, I can plainly see that they are all unique, so we know that MQ is receiving unique patch data.

Re: [oberheim] Re: Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

2011-01-16 by Paul Cunningham

I've written patch editing software for the Matrix-1000, and I remember from my testing that although the name for the patch is reserved in the sysex format, the Matrix-1000 does not return any unique data for these fields -- if I remember right it sets them to 0x00 (zero) which isn't even ASCII friendly. So if you aren't seeing any patch names, that's normal for a Matrix-1000. -pc

Really? For me, opening any given patch in the editor in MQ showed parameters for an obviously different patch, but the sounding timbre still remained that of the patch selected when I "got" the bank. This makes editing virtually impossible.

So can you audition any of the RAM or ROM patches from MQ? Because I can't =(.

Hey,

I know this was a few years ago, but I started using my Matrix 1000 again and was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing that MQ library you spoke about.

If you feel like it, send to raradna@.... Thanks!

Re: Matrix 1000 and SQ Midiquest 10 XL HELP

2014-03-28 by <GOODFELLOWPAT@...>

For anyone reading.... I had, and still having this same issue.. but I'm making headway. I've found it helps to store thepreset you want to edit into the Matrix BEFORE you double-click on the patch (to edit it) in MQ.

Once you've done that, use the 'Get' function to bring it back into your Patch Editor list - then double-click the name to go to patch edit. The correct patch should now be available for editing.

When you're done, repeat the process just to be certain you don't lose it, i.e, store it back to the Matrix, then use 'Get' again to put it back in your patch-bank list, and save that MQ file before you mess-up again and lose it.

The other thing - when you're done editing, just click that little icon that looks like a graphic equalizer, to close the patch edit window which returns you to the Patch Bank list. I was having the same issue - once the patch edit window had opened every patch I clicked played the same thing. But closing the window to return to the patch bank , then re-selecting the next patch for editing worked.

And if you can follow all that, then you're probably not having these issues to begin with ;-)

Forget software faulty editors and windows hang ups.
Get a hardware editor for your Matrix !

Yes, +1 for the source of those hardware controllers. I'm having a heap of fun generating random patches with MQ, but a reasonably priced dedicated controller that works more or less straight outta the box, to tweak these patches would be unbelievable (I do have a BCR, but found it a headache to set-up)!

Have you looked at the KiwiTechnics patch editor? Worth the $ if you have other synths it can control. I am currently using it to control my MKS70, MKS50, K3M, DSS-1, EX8000, and SCI MultiTrak (with Bob Grieb's updated OS). Not only is it highly versatile, but it's also very intuitive and built like a tank.

Hi,
I built a hardware controller for Marion MSR2, Tetra, the Shruthi etc ... If a french user can send me a matrix 1000 for a few days, I can try to make a template for it. Sysex seem as comprehensive as those of Marion.
The project name is ll113, you will find all the info on the net. Without CV / Gate, the controller costing no more than € 150 and you have a bonus four sequencers, arpeggiator etc...
Regards

Well, I gonna let some light about ObiMagiX6000 and Volt

I start this enterprise "Volt Crafty Devices" two years ago. As a fan of synthetizers and audio, I work in what a I like, things build from and for musicians, to solve problems and open doors to inspiration, things that market can't offer or don't bodder to.

At this stage I developed a number of products, and another ones are comming.
This is a two man enterprise in an early stage, so I have no web page, no large quantities of products in stock, or distribution, but many musicians are enjoying Volt products right now, specially in Argentina, were I come fromm.

About "ObiMagiX6000"

The ObiMagiX6000 controller, for matrix synthetizers, was the most difficult controller I developed until now. The underpower processor of the oberheim, and awfull and bugsy sysex implementation was a great challenge.
If you experienced the use of Pc sound editors with a Matrix, sure you experiensed a lot off hung ups and other issues.
ObiMagiX6000 is a real plug and play device, specially designed and tailored to work with the right timing, and the sysex messages issues of the oberheim.
72 parameters at you fingertips to tweek.
Matrix modulation and some other parameters still need to be accessed from the panel, also negative numbers, because de sysex specs of the Oberheim.
I, as an owner of twice Oberheims, can personally tell you that you gonna discover a real new one Oberheim sound at your fingers.
You need the last epromm for Oberheim Matrix Keyboard.( I can provide to you also )
Matrix 6r and 1000 are ok.

You can check the Volt Crafty Devices facebook at:

https://www.facebook.com/public/Volt-Crafty-Devices

Or see this video.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LCgrUBgDs9Y

Price is u$s 250 plus shipping.

There are also other Volt controllers for this synths:

Yamaha Dx7
Roland Juno
Roland Jx8p
Korg Dw8000
Akai miniak
Alesis micron
Korg R3
Korg microkorg xl
Roland mks70

IMM - (is a stand alone D Beem like infrared device)
Midi to din sync
Midi to Cv
Midi Thru ( 1in 6out)

Marcelo Malmierca

There is 3 ObiMagiX6000 controllers in stock right now.

Cheers to all !
