Matrix 6 presets

2012-07-16 by sloppyjoe6412

Hi, I own a Matrix 6 with a blank memory. I have the original cassette tape but every attempt I made to load the presets failed. Also failed at trying to send any patch data / commands via laptop. And since I'm neither good nor patient at experimenting with so many numbered parameters (it's easier playing with a few knobs as in my P600), my Matrix 6 is essentially collecting dust.

In summary, does anybody have a PRINTED list of parameters of some good or at least well known patches, something I can use as a starting point to tweak things by myself? I understand it's a slow and backwards way to do patch programming, but the alternative is to not use the synth at all.

Thanks!

Hi,

I had probs with my matrix 6 and transferring sysex patches until I upgraded it to 2.13

I didn't have any cassettes to load patches from, so here's what I did...

Download the wav files from this page:
http://www.overacker.com/oberheim.htm

Drag each wav into iTunes and name approprately

Sync them your iPod or iPhone or iPad

Connect the audio cable from your ipod/iphone/ipad whatever to your Matrix

Press "Load from Cassette" on your Matrix while pressing play on your ipod/iphone/ipad

Try to time these correctly or you may miss a patch or two.

If you have problems with errors, adjust the volume on your ipod/iphone/ipad to about 90%

good luck!

mark

I don't think what you want was ever published.
The restoration of the internal memory from the cassette isn't for everybody, even at the time when everybody owned cassette machines in new condition.

I've never had problems myself, but most people express frustration at this method.
The phase inversion is a common problem, as is too low an output level.
A Radio shack mono machine with a loudspeaker level output was the recommended machine.
I never saw one of those myself, and I eventually got a Sony Pro Walkman which worked with no trouble.

There is an alternative.

Do you have any software that would enable a sysex dump?
Obviously a MIDI interface is required too, but the software is crucial.

I have a number of patch dumps from this synth in a number of formats.
I believe sysex dumps are still available on some websites, if not I can look then out.

I'm not near my Matrix 6 so I can't offer a blow by blow account of how you do this, but I'm pretty sure the manual description is accurate.

Getting successful uploads from the Obie and Sequential data cassettes were and are a black art, and an excercise in experimentation and frustration. I found that playing the cassette and recording it digitally into the computer, then using a waveform program (such as Nero) to clean up analog artifacts such as tape hiss, and then playing it back from the computer to the keyboard improved upload results. You may find that your cassette has dropouts or other abnormalities. I also second Mr. Lambert's suggestions below. There was a site that had sysex data for the M12 but that site has gone dormant for years. If anyone knows of a site for sysex program data, please do tell. Good luck!

I'll be darned! It worked!

I never thought there would be digitized versions of the old cassette tape "data / noise". I burned the .wav files to an audio cd, played it and apparently every patch loads fine (I didn't try all of them just because the overacker page has a lot of libraries).

Thanks to Mark and to all who suggested fixes -unfortunately, I never got the synth to recognize any sysex command (early OS maybe?) but the audio files did the trick.
