Matrix 1000 / Matrix 6R Sysex Dump / Utilities Suggestions?

Matrix 1000 / Matrix 6R Sysex Dump / Utilities Suggestions?

2015-04-25 by dialtr@...

I own both a Matrix 1000 and a Matrix 6R. I am considering selling the Matrix 1000, but would like to save the patch banks from it first so that I have access to the sounds on the Matrix 6R. Has anyone had success with this?

Also, can anyone suggest a good (preferably cheap or free) SYSEX utility that works with these synths that might help me accomplish the goal? Even better, has someone already ripped out the Oberheim Matrix 1000 banks?

I've been googling around and have been finding a lot of stale links. :)

For the Mac, at least, there are tons of alternatives.

Possibly the simplest IMHO is the Sysex Librarian, a simple open-source program for recording and playing back Sysex files. Use the "Dump Bank" feature of the M-1000 to play back an entire Bank into the program, and it'll take you about ten minutes to have a copy of all presets.

Next in line for me is the Obie Editor. It's not only a patch librarian but also a full-blown editor, and one of the best as well. It has last been updated 2011, but AFAIK it just works, so that's fine. Free as in free beer.

You can also use JSynthLib. It's Java-based, so you should be able to get it to run on a Windows or Linux machine as well. I must admit I had trouble doing that. I must also admit that I don't like it very well - it took me some time to get it to work as a patch librarian, usability seems suboptimal to me, and it is not very reliable in catching bank dumps. But it's also free.

Thanks, Jan.
I opted for SysEx Librarian on the Mac, and figured out my previous mistake: I was clicking "record one" instead of "record many."
Would anyone else who owns a Matrix-6 or 6R be interested in the banks? I have them in the format used by SysEx librarian. The format appears to be hexadecimal text.
One thing I noticed, however, is that when dumping the banks, the patch names appear on the 6R using generic names. This is likely because the M1000 didn't have a display that supported displaying a patch name, and so they just didn't bother setting the names to anything representative of what they are.
I found a list of the patches here:

I'm a computer programmer, so I am going to write a program to update the banks with the proper patch names. This will require some data entry on my part but should be feasible. Anyone feel free to contact me if they'd like the banks right away, or else I'll just wait to post them until I've made the patch name corrections.

Have you looked here:

maybe with you having programming skills the free demo would do what you need...?
