New KLM367 PCB: Sourcing all the parts

New KLM367 PCB: Sourcing all the parts

2010-04-21 by psicraft_designs

Hi everyone,

As a member of the groupbuy set up by HyperJed, I am going about acquiring the parts needed to populate the new KLM367-a PCBs I have coming - No doubt there are many of you in the same boat.

Jed has been thoughtful enough to provide parts lists on the group buy list, but of course this is only the main piece of the pirate's treasure map and not the buried chest of doubloons we are after - I am starting this thread to serve as a focus for our combined efforts to source and order all the parts required from the numerous vendors in question.

Let me start with with a note for those who plan to order from Mouser: I have imported Jed's list into a mouser project that contains most of the available parts in one big order. If anyone would like to get access to this please let me know and we'll set it up via private message. You can order this project's parts as one package for around $60 USD (depending on your local exchange rates) and it includes all of the mouser part numbers in Jed's parts list with the exception of the following: 140-50N2-100J-TB-RC. This part is a ceramic disc capacitor that mouser will only sell in lots of 2000 (!).

There are also a number of items in this project that mouser has listed as backorder. They are:

PART DESCRIPTION REQ'D
291-62K-RC Carbon Film Resistors 62Kohms 0.05 1
291-68K-RC Carbon Film Resistors 68Kohms 0.05 1
CMF5510K000FHEK Metal Film Resistors 1/4watt 10Kohms 1% 1
291-22M-RC Carbon Film Resistors 22Mohms 0.05 1
291-2.2M-RC Carbon Film Resistors 2.2Mohms 0.05 1
UFW1H100MDD Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors 5
HEF4066BP,652 Multiplexer Switch ICs QUAD BILATERL SW 1
CD4051BEE4 Multiplexer Switch ICs 8-Channel Analog 2
CD4011UBEE4 Gates (AND / NAND / OR / NOR) Quad 2-Input 3
TL072ACP Op Amps JFET Input Low Noise 3
CD4042BE Latches Quad D-Type 6

If you order the project without removing these items they will go into a backorder, which may not be what you want.

For a starting question to the group, I am interested to know if anyone has a source on the 140-50N2-100J-TB-RC (or has bought 2000 of them and would like to sell a few ;-) ) and also if there are any opinions about simply doing a backorder with Mouser vs. ordering these out of stock parts from an alternate supplier like Digi-Key.

Let the games begin... !

Hi,

I have a near complete list of parts using Farnell if you are interested.
Some of these parts are not difficult to obtain, even in a third worlds
county such as the UK! I believe that Farnell trade in the US as ŒNewark¹.
For example 140-50N2-100J-TB-RC (Mouser) is equivalent to Farnell part
number 1141756 (10pF/50v ceramic). It also helps to have a line up of
different suppliers in case stock is not available. I could suggest a few
but I think they are UK only. What we need is someone selling a bag of
components along with the boards so that it is a complete kit!

Cheers,
Andy

Heartily seconded, but who would be so bold (and may I add fearless, rich and idle enough) to source the parts in quantity, sort them all into organized packs and then run such a mail-order business at the same non-profit level as HyperJed and yourself?

...If only it were me: I'd really enjoy the rich and idle part, and would have a lot of fun playing electronics warehouse in between dips in the pool and bites of lobster thermidore! ;-)

Since there are apparently no millionaire philanthropists (as yet) stepping up to the plate, I figure the next best thing is us working together to get 'project order' kits worked out that cover all the bases - Then at least the new board owners don't have to start from scratch referencing the parts list on the group buy page.

I will look into Newark as you suggest and post back here when I know more - In the meantime anyone else who has already done this is more than welcome to chime in!

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Andy,

I really could use that Farnell parts list - It turns out that Farnell's part numbers ARE interchangeable with Newark's as you suggested, so if you could email me the Farnell list I will go about searching it through and assembling an equivalent project for us KLM board stuffers in North America.

Thanks again for everything,

Tony

Re: [PolySix] Re: New KLM367 PCB: Sourcing all the parts

2010-05-06 by Jed Jorgensen

Tony, there may also be good substitutes for some of the parts on backorder
at Mouser. There are other brands of resistors that will work just fine and
metal film will probably work just as well as carbon comp. There may be
other manufacturers of the other back-ordered parts as well.

I haven't had a chance to look myself, but with the exception of a few rare
parts that may not be interchangeable you shouldn't feel locked in to the
specific parts we used.

Jed,

Thanks again for all the information. You and Andy are certainly card carrying members of the League of Extraordinary Synth Rebuilders for undertaking all the work to get these boards made and the parts list published!

Now let's see if I can get this Polysix playing 80's arpeggios again... Where's that confounded soldering iron?

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony,

I just want to double check the data on the Farnell spreadsheet as there are
some slight holes. Once done I will post this for all to see. Should be a
couple of days, but well worth the wait!

Cheers,
Andy
