ROM upgrade and forced output mode?

ROM upgrade and forced output mode?

2007-08-01 by djhohum

Hi All,

I want to be able to use my P2002 with static voice assignment. It seems that's called "forced
output mode"? I have rom version 3.0 and I see that wine country has the latest roms for
about $24 and that it is needed to use individual outs. I have no problem doing the individual
out mod myself as it can't be anything more than jacks wired to the individual voices. But,
what exactly does the final rom do that version 3.0 does not?

I have to ask, since I can burn roms, is the image online somewhere?

thanks,
daryl

Re: [prophet2000] ROM upgrade and forced output mode?

2007-08-02 by John Pallister

I don't know offhand what OS my 2002+ has, but it does have
the individual outputs, so assuming it has the latest
version, I could pull the chips, read them and post the
binary file(s). But first I have to assemble my EPROM
programmer kit, and it'll be a week or two before I get
around to that (very busy with work blah blah).

I've already promised to read the ROMs from my Wavestation
A/D and send them to someone called Tom, so you'll be number
two in the queue. ;)

What do people think of the ethics of "ripping" 20-year-old
synth firmware & posting/sending it (without charging
anything, of course)? In this case Wine Country might
actually have a license to the code, but I suspect that
other places I've seen don't (e.g. Route 66 Studios selling
the final JX-10 firmware). Maybe I'll ask this question on AH...

Cheers,

John :^P

Great! I appreciate it. Let me know if I can return the favor.

I almost don't want to answer that because I'm pretty opinionated on
the matter.

From a more practical perspective, however, he number of people with
eprom programmers is pretty small so I suspect that unless you're
selling the chips you aren't really cutting into wine country's
business by sharing the images.

tnx,

No problem... I am keen to get these done reasonably soon,
but obviously the day job has to take priority. Send me an
email if you haven't heard anything in a week or two.

You, opinionated? Inconceivable... ;) Feel free to email me
off-list if you want to get it off your chest.

Indeed. It's that whole "necessary" vs. "contingent" thing:
is it actually OK, or just not really that bad?

leaving aside the ethics or the practical matter of how you might get
y'rself a version 4 rom, you are right that it is needed for the
individual outs support ("FO" in the dynamic allocation menu).

adding the official separate outs kit was not trivial on my 2002; it
involves cutting track on the main voice card to isolate the voices
from each other (they are passive-mixed onto the main output amps) &
buffer them onto both the separate output jacks & back into the
passive mix arrangement.
you may be able to dispense with this if you know what you're doing &
use (say) switching jack sockets so that an isolated voice
"disappears" from the passive mixer. have you got schemos?

the other thing that appeared in v4 was the crossfade looping. you can
read all about this in my annotated chapter 13 in the files section. :-)

Good idea, me thinks :)

Ok, that's what I thought.

I have schemos for the 2000 and what you've described would be
pretty easy (trivial) for me. I used the schemos that I have to
repair the dead voice on my 2002.

I don't like cutting traces if I can avoid it. I would do that mod
by using another socket with a bent out leg.

Cool, thanks.

Prophet 2002+ firmware

2008-09-01 by John Pallister

Hi,

Well, it has only taken me a year or so, but I've finally
ripped my P2002+ firmware for you, all 32kB of it. The chip
in mine is an Atmel AT27256-25DC1. Unfortunately the sticker
had come off the little quartz window, so I can't say
exactly what version it is, but as I said, mine definitely
has the memory expansion and the multiple outputs, so it
should do the job for you.

Cheers,

John :^P

Re: [prophet2000] Prophet 2002+ firmware

2008-09-02 by John Pallister

.BIN implies a raw, unadorned stream of byte values; no
headers, checksums or other formatting. The fact that it is
32768 bytes long means it fits exactly into a
15-bit-wide/256kbit EPROM chip (via an EPROM programmer).

For more information about EPROMs, see
http://www.qsl.net/yo5ofh/doc/how_eprom_works.htm

Putting it in a .zip file means that you can test the
integrity of the file (since the .zip format contains a
checksum) to make sure there aren't any errors.

Note that I haven't tested this data (i.e. burned it back
into a chip and tried it in my Prophet 2002+) so I can't
make any promises that it'll work.

If anyone is brave enough to try this firmware in their
2002, can they please let us know how it goes... ;)

Cheers,

John :^P
