Yes, a MIDI track should contain any data to store
the presets for it. An empty track will always forget
the preset settings!
It's enough to record one of the realtime controllers movement,
or anything else which can not be heard.
The fastest way (for me) to test it is moving to another pattern
(maybe a factory preset which has all 16 tracks used), and after
move back your actual pattern.
