Champagne tastes maybe, but the same beer budget as everyone else - I'm
using mackies and behringers right now. I just use spdif, a patch bay and/or
my outboard pres during mixdown.

Yes, my yamaha got it's share of shop time before I ditched it. Dead
channels, dead LCD, and a crashed ROM.

I have yet to use or even know of a mackie that didn't die at one point. My
friend's caught fire in his living room. My promoter's died during the break
in a set, and they had to borrow one of the bands mixers to finish. Good
thing their customer service is so good.

Right now, I have two 16xx series for my main rig at work - one is always in
the shop, while the other is in the rig. I rarely have both of them at a
time. Right now, one is off having the VU meters fixed - a relatively
cosmetic issue for once. I'm starting to feel uncomfortable about using
them.

I was about to buy a pair of 824s, when a friend told me that their bottom
end left a lot to be desired, and he constantly found himself mixing bass
heavy as a result. My own experience with them on music has been limited -
I've used them for a lot of voice overs and editing but little critical
music work. Unfortunately, I don't have a pair I can check out any more, but
they really will show you all the things wrong with your mix.

I'd recomend auditioning the same speakers in more than one store if you
can.

Wow, you have expensive tastes. That is the coolest little mixer I
have seen. It's a shame that I would have to sell my car to afford
it.

I too am dissapointed in my Yamaha digital mixer (promix 01). I
later picked up an old Hill 4-bus that was cheaper (used), sounds
better and dosen't keep coming up with dead channels. My friends
have had reliability issues with low end Mackie desks. I have been
discouraged from looking at them ever since. The Allen & Heath mix-
wizard series seem to be the best built under $1000 and I have had
only good experiences with thier bigger GL series mixers.

On the monitor front, nothing beats Dynaudio for me. Event has the
best reputation for less expensive monitors among my friends.
Genelec (noted for good imaging) and Mackie (noted for a big bottom
end) monitors are also well respected. It is a rather personal
decision so pick a quiet Tuesday afternoon to audition the things at
a music store.
