Welcome to the wonderful world of gear aquisition...

What's your budget? What, no limit did you say?

http://www.speck.com/xmix_2.shtml
http://www.genelec.com/products/1037c/1037c.php

Alternately, you could get a behringer line mixer for $100...

Speakers are a sliding scale, and you usually >do< get what you pay for.

Yamaha has a good reputation for mixers as well, and the MG10/2
arrives soon. I'll post a review on it once mine arrives, but it's a
10-channel mixer with EQ for ~$100. Hard to beat that if it sounds
decent!

alesis monitor ones, are awsome. they come non pwered, and powered, and are
different in price. as for a mixer, i am not sure how many channel it is,
cause i dont have one, but if you can find the korg mixer with the kaos pad on
it, those are mad fun for turntables and live equip!

Re: [xl7] Re: mixer and monitor

I don't like the yamaha digital mixer series. The preamps and DAC are mediocre at best, at least in the 01V - 03V line. Even when A/Bing it with my mackie, there was no question which sounded better; I put mine up for sale the next day.

Champagne tastes maybe, but the same beer budget as everyone else - I'm
using mackies and behringers right now. I just use spdif, a patch bay and/or
my outboard pres during mixdown.

Yes, my yamaha got it's share of shop time before I ditched it. Dead
channels, dead LCD, and a crashed ROM.

I have yet to use or even know of a mackie that didn't die at one point. My
friend's caught fire in his living room. My promoter's died during the break
in a set, and they had to borrow one of the bands mixers to finish. Good
thing their customer service is so good.

Right now, I have two 16xx series for my main rig at work - one is always in
the shop, while the other is in the rig. I rarely have both of them at a
time. Right now, one is off having the VU meters fixed - a relatively
cosmetic issue for once. I'm starting to feel uncomfortable about using
them.

I was about to buy a pair of 824s, when a friend told me that their bottom
end left a lot to be desired, and he constantly found himself mixing bass
heavy as a result. My own experience with them on music has been limited -
I've used them for a lot of voice overs and editing but little critical
music work. Unfortunately, I don't have a pair I can check out any more, but
they really will show you all the things wrong with your mix.

I'd recomend auditioning the same speakers in more than one store if you
can.

Wow, you have expensive tastes. That is the coolest little mixer I
have seen. It's a shame that I would have to sell my car to afford
it.

I too am dissapointed in my Yamaha digital mixer (promix 01). I
later picked up an old Hill 4-bus that was cheaper (used), sounds
better and dosen't keep coming up with dead channels. My friends
have had reliability issues with low end Mackie desks. I have been
discouraged from looking at them ever since. The Allen & Heath mix-
wizard series seem to be the best built under $1000 and I have had
only good experiences with thier bigger GL series mixers.

On the monitor front, nothing beats Dynaudio for me. Event has the
best reputation for less expensive monitors among my friends.
Genelec (noted for good imaging) and Mackie (noted for a big bottom
end) monitors are also well respected. It is a rather personal
decision so pick a quiet Tuesday afternoon to audition the things at
a music store.

Re: mixer and monitor

2003-05-31 by Martin Cliffe

Hi all (bit of a newbie on this group)

If you can still find it (it's been discontinued, but still seems to
be in a lot of shops, at least here in the UK) then the Mackie LM3204
does a similar job to the Speck, for about a quarter of the price!
Gorgeous little mixer... I'm looking to get one in the next few weeks.

Personally, I use Soundcraft Spirit mixers, which are great, although
the band I was in had a few Behringers, which were OK for live use
(bit noisy for recording). Then again, I think Spirit mixers are a
lot cheaper in the UK than they are in the US, relatively speaking at
least.

For monitors, best decent priced ones I've heard are the Mackie
HR624's... I don't like the Alesis ones either. Tannoy Reveal are OK,
as are Behringer Truth. Sorry, I don't know much about passive
monitors, I've not used any for a long while.

Re: mixer and monitor

2003-05-31 by wildstar_1701

i agree. i have a pair of tannoy reveal passives powered by a GLi
amp,
and i've been very happy considering how much i paid. i use them for
monitoring lots of different kinds of music, and they do pretty well
with
most things. however, for dance/club music a subwoofer is a must. i'm
budgeting for one now.

i had my reveals modified by an audio guru in watertown,
massachusetts, who did wonders for them. he does all kinds of custom
mod's, is slightly crazy, and really knows his stuff. email me
directly if you
live in that area and are interested in checking him out.

Monitor Ear Fatigue

2003-06-01 by Cornell

I've seen the term "ear" or "listening" fatigue when referring to monitors. I am not exactly sure what this is. Can someone explain? Thanks.

You start to lose objectivity while listening, it gets hard to tell if
parts are quieter or louder, etc. You're focusing on parts so much but
it's not helping. Kinda hard to explain...
