Reposting Contest info

2004-09-07 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Ok all, sounds like we have enough interest to make this worth doing, so
here's all the details and guidelines:

- All songs must be entirely composed using a Command Station only (or
P2500 for Steve), you may use a midi keyboard for note entry if you want
to though. NO computer sequencing, arps from external gear, or Karma
functions allowed. Only two tracks from each participant will be allowed.

- All songs must be 32 measures in TOTAL length (plus any reverb/delay
tails), at a reasonable tempo (ie 65 - whatever BPM). If you really need
a tempo lower than this and have a good reason why, email me privately to
discuss. No half-tempo or time signature tricks (ie 2/4) to make that 32
measures seem longer. :)

- You are responsible for the hosting of your song, so doing an anonynmous

contest is not possible. I've been looking into trying to get a single
site to host these on, but haven't had much luck finding something that
would be easy for everyone to upload to (and I don't have the time to
manage it anyway). Hopefully depending on the number of entries and file
sizes, we will also be able to host these in the files section of our
yahoogroup, but Yahoo's bandwidth limitations on file downloads will
prohibit us from using this as our primary storage space. All MP3's
should be encoded at 192kbps or less please.

- All songs will due on Friday, September 24th. That gives you all PLENTY

of time to submit something, and I do hope a lot of people participate.
This is all just for fun, so there's no reason to be bashful if you're
just getting started. If nothing else, it's a great way to get feedback
and ideas from others on things to improve on. So you're really doing
yourself a disservice by not participating. ;p

- Voting will be via a standard Yahoo groups poll, with each voter picking

the best track to vote for. In the event of a tie, the songwriters in
question will have 1 week to make changes to their songs, and then we'll
have another vote off for just those two (or more) tracks. If people want

to add alternate categories for this contest, you're free to set up polls
on your own, I just don't want to manage this.

- Once your track is completed, send me an email with the address where
people can download it, your name (email and real), and the song title.

That's it, if I'm forgetting anything, let me know! Have fun and get to
work, it's only 32 measures, so make 'em count!

new track .:hz.kontrakt.ion:.

2004-09-08 by G e r a e u s c h d i c h t e

.:hz.kontrakt.ion:. = herzkontraktion = cardiac
contraction, in this case musically: spastic
heartbeats losing themselves in lofi sonic
playgrounds. use of headphones recommended. (mixed &
mastered on headphones...)

http://tinyurl.com/6npex

gear: yamaha dx200, akai z4, jomox airbase, dod
gonkulator modulator, boss metalzone, behringer mixing
desks & compressors.

sequenced on yamaha dx200 and e-mu xl7, some parts
played live.

recorded and cut up on 4 stereo tracks in protools
free on an old 1999 imac. without external soundcard,
unfortunately (donations are welcome).

thanks for listening.
feel free to comment.

hey there Hans,

nice pastiche of noise there. i think it would sound a bit better if you
could move things out into the stereo field a bit more and maybe add some
dynamics processing to bring stuff forward. everything seems squashed in the
middle and seems to be fighting with eachother. perhaps with the industrial
noise soundscape that's what you're going for, but a wider sound would allow
each bit to really breathe.

also, everything seems to be highpassed, like there's a lot of rolloff in
the mid to low bass. not sure how intentional that is, but if you put in
some sub bass the whole mix would have more punch.

still, it sounds pretty terrible, but i mean that in the cool industrial
meaning of terrible. ;D

hm, it indeed is what i'm going for. to a certain
extent. i'll keep your advice in mind though. it's a
sound advice ;o)

there is a low cut eq on the main tracks indeed. it
just was too bass heavy. since i recorded the main
part live directly to 1 stereo track, i couldn't
really process the drums without affecting the bass or
the 'lead lines'. i'm still working on a setup that
would be a bit more practical. that's why i'm trying
to save for an external soundcard with multiple ins
and outs. unfortunately that means a new computer too,
since the specs of the one i use now are not up to the
specs soundcards require nowadays. poverty ahead.

you don't like the track? or is it just about bruddah
max' comment?

hans

ps: what i find most interesting is a gritty dirty
broken sound rich in detail and atmosphere. that's
what i hope to achieve eventually. mind you, good gear
is very practical to sculpt rough detailed sounds.
(that's why can't wait until i get the rozzbox
(http://www.rozzbox.de, sound demos here:
http://www.rozzbox.de/inhalte/seite.php?item=24) :o))

ok just to make it clear that i was praising the piece as industrial music,
which inherently sounds terrible to the ear (as opposed to a nice bit of
Mozart or what have you, which sounds pleasing and "nice" to the ear). so it
is good because it sounds terrible and this was the intention of the
composer. does that make sense?

now, my own stuff tends to sound terrible in a non-intentional way. but, as
Conan's chronicler would say, that is another story...

don't be sorry. lots of times people ask me if my gear
is broken :o)
so i learned not to take comments as 'sounds terrible'
as an offense. not if they're not elaborated.

thanks for your positive comments. and for listening,
of course!

my humble opinion on this: a tad of distortion and
grittiness sounds really _nice_ to me, not terrible. i
for myself would replace the word 'nice' with 'clean'
in the statement above. clean can be nice as well of
course. (i find myself listening to classical music
very often, actually. same goes for clean
electric/electronic music. i'm very interested in
music in general, not in genres/styles/scenes.)

i got your point from the first post, anyway. so no
prob :o)
thanks for clarifying though.
