Expansion ROM overlap.

Expansion ROM overlap.

2005-11-11 by Ronald Pieket

So a little while ago I got my XL-7, with a bonus "Proteus Pop"
expansion. I've been looking at the other expansion ROMs, trying to
get as much info before I invest in any.

I noticed that many of the instrument names in the "Composer" ROM are
the same as in my "Pop" ROM. Same with "Vintage" and "Pop". And
between the standard XL7 "Lead" ROM and "Pop", there are quite a few
duplicates. Can I assume that if an instrument has the same name, it
is exactly the same wave data? By comparing "Lead" and "Pop", which I
both have, this appears to be the case.

It would seem that the "Pop" ROM is a compilation of instruments from
other collections. Are there any instruments that are unique to "Pop"?

I haven't done side-by-side comparisons between other ROMs, but how
common are duplicate instruments?

I'm considering replacing my "Pop" with a "Composer". It appears that
all the instruments I like from the "Pop" are already in the "Lead" or
are in the "Composer" ROM. By replacing "Pop" with "Composer", I would
keep what I like, and get a few more unique instruments...

The samples in the Pop ROM and the Composer ROM are identical. The
presets are (subjectively) better on the Pop ROM, though there are half
as many of them (4 banks instead of 8). I'd wholeheartedly recommend
keeping the Pop ROM and skipping CMPSR.

Vintage and Pop should have 0% overlap IIRC, the vintage was from
mostly new stuff. I'd wholeheartedly recommend *getting* the Vintage -
it's really good stuff. The DRUM ROM is extraordinarily good too, and
is also all new samples.

Re: Expansion ROM overlap.

Thanks Aaron. I didn't realize that the Composer and Pop ROMs had the
same instrument data. Well that makes the choice easy. I love the drum
kits in the Pop ROM by the way, so I have no need for the Protean
Drums ROM.

I once owned a Vintage Pro, so I'm definitely getting a Vintage ROM.
I'm also looking at the two Papen ROMs. How would they fit a chill-out
or ambient style?

But maybe I should make a song on the XL7 first, before pouring more
money into it.
