Any suggestions as I repair my XL7 today?

Any suggestions as I repair my XL7 today?

2005-11-26 by vibesart

Greetings Experts -

Today is the the day that I replace the data-entry pot on my XL7.

If anyone has any suggestions besides the obvious wear a grounding
wriststrap etc...I am very grateful. I hope it is easy. I am told that
there are (5) solder points to un/solder on the ICB...I am an OK
solderer...but never done anything like this.

Data pot totally gone now - gigs looming this week. Thus, I must do
it...and I also must not F^^k up.

I appreciate any input!

thanks

Ed

Hi,

Me when i change a pot , i unsolder first the part who fix the pot in the IC, and after the 3 more little part.Dont be afraid to distorted the old pot when you unsolder it.

To unsolder pot, i push with the solder tool (i m french and i dont know the name of this tool) on one of the two big part , on 1 or 2 milimeters, after the other ,i repeat thoses actions until they are out of the IC, on the other side of the pot's IC.After I do the same on the 3 little left in same time to push them out in one time.

Thank you biggup

I understand the method that you describe. Unusual - you do not use
desolder braided copper or solder sucker to remove the old solder?

Have you replaced the data-entry pot on an XL7? There are a total of
(9) points - 4 points for the cover part (looks like a copper shield)
- and 5 points for the pot itself.

My Fear is that I might damage the electronic traces on the other side
of the IC - do you think that is not such a potential problem?

thanks very much!

 NO

But i haven't seen that there are so much points on this pot.

If you have the new one , cut all the point to take off the pot. After with a pliers unsolder all the point stay in the IC. You can blow on the IC to remove the rest of tin when it's warm, to let the hole empty.Me i use an iron paper clip to remove the tin inside the hole.I heat the paper clip, i push it inside the hole, and i move it to remove the tin from the hole.

Do it slowly and quietly and you didn't destroy the IC.

I didn't change this part , but i already change same on other synth, and i have change some switch on my xl7, it work grate.

Re: Any suggestions as I repair my XL7 today?

Hi
Just to add a word on removing componets from double sided boards..
Its really hard to remove componets without damaging the PCB in some
way (over heating) without using proper disoldering tools.
(I have a weller disoldering station that makes easy work of IC /
other componet removal)
Best advice is to cut the legs / pins off of the faulty componet then
remove each pin indivually with tweezers. Then you can clear the hole
with a solder sucker.
As for the metal parts of the pot that are soldered to support the
pot on the PCB, you can either apply a small amount of solder to get
good heat transfer and then use a solder sucker to remove excess
solder to a degree. You will find that the sides will be touching the
side of the plate through on the PCB so you will have to heat it up
and push it away from the pad with tweezers or the like.
Otherwise you can slowly prize the pot out one side at a time by
carefully heating each support. More solder on the pad will help alot
in achieving this. Dont over heat the pad though it will come away..
Hope that helps, though i think you might of donbe it by now!
Cheers
Gonz
