Newbie OS Requests

Newbie OS Requests

2002-07-02 by Byron

I've only been digging into my XL7 for about 2 weeks now (and DO love it),
but so far as yet, these are a few of the seemingly 'possible' things that I
think would greatly benefit the xx7's sequencing powers and ease of use...

1. Make the 'repeat' button functional at all times, including changeing the
quantize factor of it in realtime (as it's still being used)...and if it
were more sensitive to continuous changes in aftertouch pressure, it would
be much more fun (it may be somewhat continuously sensitive, I'm not very
used tp these pads pressure points yet).

2. Add a 'replace' or 'overwrite' function to the recording mode, instead of
just overdub....I think you could even squish into the REC screen if you
abbreviate the QUANT function a bit more :)

3. More in depth midi editing options, such as track compress/expand by
quantized structure or something, midi echo, groove quantize, force into Key
(oooh, that would rock!)...you know, stuff that could take you a half an
hour to do manually through that microwave sized screen?

4. Recordable notes from arpeggios instead of being able to record only key
on/key off for them.

5. Being able to assign arpeggios 'specifically' to external gear, so that
you dont have to have another new preset with it's volume pumped all the way
down just to arpeggiate another ext synth. This problem could be partially
eliminated if you could do as stated in #4 (record arp notes)...since you
could then record a presets pattern, and then change to external midi
connection, by that not having to exile a preset to a life with no volume
that you cant change the arp on if you want to retain your pattern. Even
just being able to assign the master arp externally would be nice.

6. Saveable external midi assigments in individual patterns without having
to record on a track in order to get it to save as 'ext'....this making it
much easier to make a few different pre-configured blank patterns that suit
your studios vast capabilities without re-editing 16 track assignments every
single pattern.

7. This is a wierd one, because it seemed to stop happening to me....being
able to save seperate track assignments of presets for seperate patterns.
When I first started changing them, it was changing ALL of the patterns
presets per track, but now it seems not to be...could easily be a
mis-understanding on my part.

***a few requests that, well, just arent really very likely if even
possible, just things that would be nice...

1. A half transpose button to the side of the transpose....would be odd
considering the pads are layed out to a major octave already, but it would
be nice to be able to split an octave on the fly for drum recording
particularily. I know I can trigger everything on one keyboard externally,
but the pads are much better for drums, and heat of the moment midi
scribbleing!

2. A bigger display with more lines at once! Maybe an external mini one that
can rest over this one and be attached via USB?

3. A USB disk drive zip drive or something similar, would be a godsend. I
bought an external midi sequencer in order to further myself from my
computer, now I rely on it more!

4. An optionally colored replacement carcass :))

All in all, it may sound as though I'm complaining alot, but I'm not really,
I love the XL already, but think that input from a fresh user as to its
possible drawbacks could give a different perspective. I bought the XL7 with
plans on using it solely as an external sequencer (only to find myself
supremely impressed by it's internal synthesis capabilities), and think that
some of these features would definately draw in more people looking for the
same thing.

Sincerely,
ByronE
