What to title

What to title

2002-08-13 by golerage

I just gotta ask this question. If you are using the XL7, Computers,
and other instruments without mixing turntables are you a DJ or
Programmer/Musician? Are is everything just blurry?

Thanks,
Greg

Blurry! Yes. Especially since DJs are now releasing proper albums (Paul Oakenfold - Bunkka).

I believe it depends on the audience you're going for, as well as what type of venues you're playing. Other than that, I'm sure it's subjective; each artist has his own definition/identity. I don't call myself a DJ, but I haven't ruled out the idea of mixing an hour long set rather than segmenting a set with traditional song breaks. If I did, I wouldn't consider myself a DJ, but the flyers might mention a "DJ set" to help provide the appropriate crowd.

Cool, that helps a little. Might just be known as
Soundsmiths or some other enginer type title. I am not
sure what kind of crowd I would want draw just yet.
Probably more of a industrial/techno/house crowd since
I had been playing guitar for that genre. Who knows, I
will post material on the various sites and see what
kind of feed back I get. BTW, that was a cool site you
attached.

Thanks again,
Greg

If this is the same as the rest of Oakey's "original tunes" then he's just
the executive producer, not really the writer. He just comes into the
studio and says "put a break down here", "make this part longer", "we need
deeper drums" etc. Not too different from Timo Maas and Matrin Buttrich
really, except that Timo freely admits Martin does most of the work :)

I am curious to hear that track with Perry Farrell on vocals though....

Sasha just released his ‘proper album’, titled “Airdrawndagger”. It’s quite good, if anyone is interested. I’m not sure it lives up to the hype that’s been surrounding it. It’s not quite groundbreaking, but he’s definitely a good songwriter. Different than I expected – chilled out, almost new-agey. It’s taken him 5 years, so I’m sure his role was much deeper than Oakey’s.

Yeah it's a really, really good CD IMO, I'm glad it's not all dance tunes. Some of the sound design on there is really excellent, great on headphones too, lots of spatial manipulations going on. While I'm sure that he was very hands on with this CD, it too was co-produced by Charlie May (the man behind Xpander), and Junkie XL too. I don't really care who actually wrote the CD though, it's one of my favorite's so far this year (right behind Deepsky's excellent "In Silico").

The new Underworld is pretty kick ass too, Darren leaving didn't really affect their sound at all, whew!
