Why buy a 2500?

Why buy a 2500?

2002-10-22 by ufound12

I have been doing my web homework and except for speed and Sound
Roms, I am guessing the MP-7 has all the same features as the 2500.
I like having the knobs nearby to live mix my 50 or so MIDI song
files, and I hope they will fit.

Thanks, Joe

hi

I've never seen the attraction in the Proteus 2500... its not a beautiful thing like the xl7/mp7 either ;-)

Plus the way its priced it seems to compete with the Command stations and not really offer anything more...or am i wrong?

I've had the feeling the 2500 and XX-7 were the same beast, sharing
the same operating system, minus the pads for the rackmount obviously.
The specs say the 2500 has 3 time the processing power of the *2000*.

I'm I wrong assuming the XX-7 shares the same engine than the 2500,
for the same price? It's not like the 2500 could more be used as a
stand-alone hardware sequencer than the XX-7, which are marketed for
in the first place (be it a la Groovebox/RM1x). So why would the 2500
have a more powerful CPU?

Or I'm I seriously mistaken here?

The Proteus 2500 has a faster processor than the XX-7 and P2K. It also has
24 bit digital outs where as the XX-7 has 20 bit. My guess on the faster
CPU is probably most people using the 2500 would be doing big 32 track
sequences via a computer and that faster processor would come in handy. The
XX-7 has the internal 16 track sequencer and most people would use that
rather than a computer based sequencer and the 32 channels. Hence no need
for the faster CPU. Just a guess on their thoughts though...

I am not sure about these claims. My understanding was that the XX-7 and
p2500 are identical except for the casing.

From the EMU spec sheets:

xx-7:
Data Encoding: 16-bit linear, 24-bit DAC's,
Signal to Noise: >100 dB
Frequency Response: 20-20,000Hz (+0.0/-0.1dB)
THD + Noise (DAC's): <0.002%
Power Consumption: 15 watts
Voltage Input: 90VAC – 260VAC at 50Hz – 60 Hz
Maximum Output Level: +6dBV
Output Impedance: 1000 Ohms

P2500:
Data Encoding: 16-bit linear, 24-bit DAC's,
Signal to Noise: >100 dB
Frequency Response: 20-20,000Hz (+0.0/-0.1dB)
THD + Noise (DAC's): <0.002%
Power Consumption: 15 watts
Voltage Input: 90VAC – 260VAC at 50Hz – 60 Hz
Maximum Output Level: +6dBV
Output Impedance: 1000 Ohms

Looks identical to me...

Correct Ravi. The claims are compared to the Proteus 1000 and 2000
series modules.

Yeah I guess it looks that way... I called E-Mu and they said that there is
no difference between the units. Both units have the same processor and
DACs. Other than the pads and touchstrip, it's down to the soundset. Sorry
for the mis-info!

Best,

Sebastien,

The link helped a LOT. It seems the 2500 has 128 voices!!
Not an issue for me <even when I add the B-3 ROM and try a snowplow
slide>

Thanks everyone for the comments......
