Xpander: How do you remove the matte finish

Re: Xpander: How do you remove the matte finish

2013-03-11 by envia94

... It seems that these pictures are not anymore available. Please, can somebody upload them in xpantastic?

Here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xpantastic/photos/album/0/list?order=mtime
or, here:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/xpantastic/files/Pictures/

And, does anybody know in fact what exactly was done?

Best,
Tiitu.

You do wonder if it actually was. But, there is a video on you tube showing David Morley's Xpander with the same finish.

But I would need more details and instructions before I tried it on mine. Hopefully there are some others with experience and details or Mr. Morley may chime in as well.

Fingers crossed
E

Oh, jee! Looks good.

This reminded me that I used to have a Solina String Ensamble, which was dropped during transportation and one of the wooden panels broke. Then, accidentally I sold an other synth to a retired carpenter, who was so happy with our deal that he wanted to repair the Solina box without charging that he did. When I received the repaired panel, I got an idea to treat all the panels as I used to do many times with my father for our wooden boat a long time ago. I.e., I did sand them well and treated with a good furniture lacquer 3-4 times. The result was really great. It looked darker and much deeper than the original (the lacquer must have been a little dark) and astonishingly glossy! So, the Solina became our most beautiful furniture in my opinion. In case of Xpander you need to know how to treat metal panels, I guess. But, have you seen those shiny cars treated with epoxy or something? Maybe the same method could be used. So, you might want to ask this in a car paintshop. ...

the details were sent to me individually sorry i forgot-here they are

Just replying to you regarding the cleaning of the front face on the Matrix 12 / Xpander...

Nothing overly technical involved i can assure you of that :)

All you need is a damp cloth, nothing too heavy material wise, basically if you think it will scratch the underside of the matte finish? don't use... If my memory serves me correctly i think i used a J cloth, a polishing cloth isn't that effective for taking the coating off but will help to lift any remaining smears and shine the face up nicely after the matte has been removed.,

Firstly i recommend assessing the condition of the face,is it looking dull to very dull? or / and possibly discolored in places (gray/brown)? are there small flecks of matte that have come away already?? i would expect most Xpander's or matrix 12's to be of similar age by this point in time not unless you have a Japanese version,in which case the coating could be newer (may not have degraded enough over time)or could have been applied differently..who knows?

be sure to squeeze all of the excess water from the cloth, yes tap water works just fine... and gently rub the matte face with the cloth, this will dampen the face and loosen up the coating, leave it a few minutes to let the moisture soak in,try to begin at a point on the face where the coating has already become nicked or scratched,(saves creating a new scratch point or overly applying pressure to the face to get the coating to initially lift). you will need a certain degree of elbow grease to lift the coating off though, not enough pressure or too much pressure to the face could cause additional scratching or internal damage,so its still a bit of a fine line....

All in all i think mine took about 5-6 hours to deface /reface.... its a bit of a slog but for any proud owner its well worth the effort.... i must stress though be ultra careful cleaning the face and about the amount of water on the face or cloth , i know it sounds a bit obvious but accidents can still happen.... and i am not saying that this method will work for everybody's obie 12 / xp.. but sure as you can see its worth the try.... jasus! i really hope nobody wrecks their synths in the process?? that would be tragic....! or maybe not? spare-parts for all? only joking...

anyway, best wishes for now.

Take care have a good one and all that jazz - dc

well i haven't tried it "yet"-it seems the right mental attitude/commitment is needed and also i've gotten sidetracked with many other equipment pursuits for awhile plus the main thing i want next for my xpanders are those encoder kits honestly!also i'm kindof afraid i'd mess it up somehow but probably some day it will be attempted because it looks so damn good.take care-

Re: Xpander: How do you remove the matte finish

2014-03-15 by <joigaloid9@...>

Quite accidentally, I removed the matte finish partly on my Matrix-12. I had to clean off some of the foam from the road case which had adhered to the surface. I used denatured alcohol which removed the stuck on foam, but removed the matte finish as well. It did take a bit of "elbow grease" to get it all off however.

BTW: I was going to sell my Matrix-12 soon, but was worried about lost value because the finish had been removed. I am surprised some people prefer their instrument that way.
