Matrix-12 parts/service

Matrix-12 parts/service

2008-07-03 by A

Hi all...

So I was given a very beat up Matrix 12 recently. I thought it had
power supply issues because the fuse appeared to be fine. For the
heck of it I bought a new one and sure enough...the old bird powered
right up.

So here is where I'm at...

The self-tuning feature shows that all tuning is failing.

The keyboard has some stuck notes.

The infinite rotary dials can be spotty.

The displays are dim in some areas, though thankfully I can still see
all data.

Oh...and the clear plastic sheet over the graphics has gone cloudy
(unless wet) and the paint is worn down to bare aluminum above the
keyboard in some places...

I am thankful in advance of anyone able to offer some advice/assist in
bringing this awesome bird back to full health points.

Also...I read on one site that the keyboards on these are similar to
both the Kawai K3 and Akai AX80...is that true and can they be weighted?

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from tha group.

Peace.

Hi!

Probably the best compatible keyboards you'll find form Kurzweil and Roland.

Regarding the displays, I wonder if Matrix-12 could be fully controlled using a midi
controller with knopfs like those from CME or Doeppfer. If so, that would solve The Broken
Displays Problem!

What do you think of this idea, guys?!

Best regards,
Tiitu.

I have a Matrix-12 keyboard somewhere that I bought brand new but I
used a couple of the keys. I wonder if you can swap keys from your old
board to make it work? PM me if interested.

Hi,

* As far as I know, Xpander and Matrix can echo thru MIDI SysEx each
panel operation, so I think it could be possible to remotely control
everything.
The issue is perhaps to really understand the logic for the order of
the differents sysex messages. I began few month ago to make a device
panel in Cubase SX but I gave up. Messages sent by a operation on a
single panel button can be different because they are linked to the
parameter being changed, and not the button itself. It was too
complex to implement something in Cubase with device panels.

* For the plastic sheet over the graphics that has gone cloudy, I have
the same issue with my Xpander, I was thinking of applying a kind of
polish over it, but I really fear to make more damages. Does anybody
tried this, and which kind of polish ?

Regards,
Greg.

Did you try the DAC test/calibration stuff in the service manual?

As in "stuck on?" The M12 keyboard has the grey-metalized-rubber-
with-PC-board style keycontacts and can be cleaned very easily. This
is very easy to disassemble/reassemble. I've had good success using
91% rubbing alcohol from a supermarket and q-tips, although I'm sure
there's a more pro solution. Do you have stuck note problems using
MIDI to control your M12 or just with keys?

Did you try the section in the service manual for VFD voltage
adjustment?

I think the display board is mounted on a hinge that allows easy
access to the in-side of the plastic sheets, maybe wipe them off?

Good luck to you

I'd like to do that myself
