where's the warmth parameter? Lead synth questions

where's the warmth parameter? Lead synth questions

2006-07-06 by spaceanimals

Most of the lead sounds I program wind up sounding cold and glassy. I
could tame this with EQ but if I knew how to program it would help.

Filter questions: How do you usually set the key track? When would you
use the band eliminate filter and what do you usually set the band pass
filter? Resonance seems to really affect the band pass filter.

Do you use the sync feature? There's three sync settings--master,
slave, and both. Which sounds better? FM settings: is it better to use
master, slave, or both. I never can remember which is master and which
is slave.

Do you layer sounds or just keep basic one or two osc patches. I have
the best luck with simple sounds.

Thanks

Rainbow Jimmy

Try using the feedback on the VCA, a VCO edge of around 60-75 and unison mode to fatten up the sound.

I 'think' a setting of 32-34 is around 1/1 keytrack.

Use the Aural exctier with a low drive of around 40 and a +50% mix to add a little squelchy high end gloss to the VCF resonance.

Try using the symphonic fx with a high rate but low depth on sync sounds for that wide Synthex sound like J M Jarre. ;-)

Have fun

Rob.

Hi Jimmy !

It depends on the type of sound you want ... with little or no enveloppe
effect on the filter cutoff frequency it's better to set a tight key
track . If not the extreme notes will remain unfiltered , giving the
sound of the raw waveform . On the opposite you can leave the keytrack
parameter close to 0 .

It's absolutely normal , as on a real analog filter the higher the "Q"
factor (resonance) the shorter the bandwidth : the filter is more
selective but the frequency response is not flat .

Yes but it gives "distorted" or "harsh" sounds easily , sometimes a bit
like a ring modulator . Try it on a simple patch with both oscillators ,
say, for example a 2 sawtooth pad : turn on and off the sync and listen ...

Most of my sounds are "simple" , but i use 2 types of "multiple" sounds
. With the keyboard split a sound with the arpeggiator or sequencer at
left hand and another sound on the upper part of the keyboard . You can
use rythmic bass patterns and play around with another sound , usually
complex "fx" pads , to get a nice emulation of the early synth players .
Another useful trick is to program both "scenes" with slightly different
sounds and swap them with the mod wheel (obviously affected to the
scenes mix !) . Very impressive with organ type sounds : you can "mix"
between a jazzy sound and a more distorted, rock sound like with a 2
keyboards organ . You can achieve the same trick with 2 pipe organ sound
, small flutes on a scene and a big "churchy" sound on the other .
Do you have a "patch book" with commented examples ? If not i can send
you one in .pdf file ...

This maybe not really a reply. I'm just still crazy about the sheer
brutality of this MOnSTer underestimated synth. This kinda cold,
glassy, cutting EDGE outshines everything. To give those sounds back
some "bottom" I (miss)use the VCA-feedback.
Something that helps ME programming is: I no longer try to make sounds
work on 5 oktaves, when I need only 2. Thus keyboard-tracking, which
could eat up DAYS on a DX7, no longer matters.

Another method of producing 'warmth' I use on the AN1X and on some other synths is to have a guitar type overdrive/distortion set at a really low drive and have a high shelving eq (around 800hz-2khz) to cut out the nasty high end frequencies with a little boost around 200hz. This gives a kinda pseudo valve warmth.
