Sorry to burst your little virus bubble but, I really don't like the sound
that the virus emits- I think this down to it being 24 bit and not 16. There
is something about the sound of 24 bit I really don't like- and although the
Virus has all the idiosyncracies's of an analogue (clever bit of programming
I may point out)- It's way to clean IMO And (like a lot of other 24 bit
stuff) because of the amount of processing needed to get it to function- the
sound gets "put in the background"- I know there's now gonna be a load of
mails telling me what a load of crap I'm talking- but I *REALLY* do believe
this (I've got a very wide hearing range and I'm the one who always starts
complaining about hearing ultrasound (bats, intruder detectors, dog whistles
LOL!)- when everybody else thinks I'm going bonkers!!

I can demonstrate this btw on my Nord (although it's not 24 bit- it gets
near). Make a simple patch and it sounds pretty damn analogue- add a few
modules- up to the limit of the DSP and.... hey presto (In fact it's pretty
similar to that PWM popping sound I mentioned before). Remember when people
like Philips discovered 1-bit as opposed to 24x Oversampling on CD's??- well
perhaps there is a better way to physical modelling- and are we (at the
moment) barking up the wrong tree??

Don't worry, my little Virus bubble is not burst... :-)

I think the Virus does a fabulous job of emulating classic analog
synth sounds (especially the Minimoog). The sound is clean and can be
delicate or quite ballsy. I like the clean sound and wish my real
analogs sounded that clean. It's a lot of work to get them to sound
as good.

The Virus also creates a wide range of sounds that a classic analog
can't touch. Over time, as I've lived with the Virus b, I have grown
to appreciate it much more.

I'm curious.... how much time you have had with the Virus to form
your opinion? Was it in your own studio environment where you can
rely on the monitoring environment to accurately depict what you are
hearing? I think it can make a difference on how you perceive any
synth. When I first got the virus b I thought it was great, but with
time it has grown beyond that. Maybe I'm just used to it's sound by
now...

I don't have to worry about the DSP thing. I have enough synths to
spread the sound chores around. I agree that maxing out a DSP synth
will result in poorer performance. But, the Virus b is anything but
background.

Sayer,

"Emulating"- that's exactly it!- I think this is one thing that I hate the
most in a lot of hardware stuff (as well as the sound- and yes we are all
entitled to our own
opinions ! :-))- The Nord Micro/Modular is about the only hardware synth I
know of where you can break out of that mold. I think the virus would me more
exciting if you could program it in a similar fashion. I borrowed a virus for
2 weeks (my speakers are Alesis Monitor One's btw)- Yes it can 'emulate' a
minimoog- but then can most synths these days! I just couldn't get on with
it..........Ahhh- My mate Justin (who runs the Topica Nord Modular list- oh
i'm such a name dropper hehehe!) gave me this link- this is a very cool synth
indeed- especially if you are a fan of the SIDstation!

Definately worth a listen- a sort of virtual EMS VCS3 (My all-time favourite
synth!)

The Nord is a totally different concept, well maybe not since it
is 'emulating' a modular synth. I wouldn't mind if Access gave it a
go as a new synth model though. :-)

Maybe the K-5000, Fizmo and, Microwave XT would fall in the non-
emulation category? (although, I guess the XT is based on the PPG)

Here's an example of why I like the Virus b. The track is
called "Precursor Legacy" and an excerpt from it can be found at:

The two synth sounds between 3:12 and 3:55 (not the kick that comes
in) is the Virus. Isn't that a nice unique sound? :-)

Cool... I'll check it out. Thanks for the link!
