I always record in mono, play live in mono and rarely use effects. Easier to mix. Rainbow Jimmy http://www.spaceanimals.com

So.....Would I be better off NOT spending the extra money on a mixer/effects board with 4 specific stereo inputs. I was looking at a Behringer (forget specific model) that was 16ch (4 dedicated mono inputs). Would appreciate input on this as the wife is already getting a bit antsy on the amount of cash I've input on my new hobby. Peace! Depends on what you are going to do. I use a separate mixer before I feed the MOTU 24i. I use effects in the outboard mixer mainly from the dsp1024(behringer) which I can also control via midi ( I have a effect track in Sonar just for this). I also use dxi and vst plug-ins. I have nano-verbs and compressors for the outboard mixer (which is a behringer MX2004a) I also use a BBE 482 as well. I prefer mixing outside but I finalize using the internal mixer (in my case I use Sonar 3). Dale Dale Kay Administrator Kay-Net.com Lancaster CA Bus 661.723.0266 admin@... Not many budget mixers offer 'true' stereo sends - you'd need to use both sends in parallel AND your FX processor would need to effect each channel individually. Again, not typical for a budget FX processor. The EQ and Pan settings are applied equally to both the left and right sides of a pair - this isn't going to be a problem so long as you avoid the 'everything in stereo mish mash' that Mike alludes to in his post. So true Jon, not a budget thing. I re-wire my rig when I want to do full left-right. While the effects I use are stereo type, I find some cross talk happening. When I am playing with the 5.1 or greater recording, I use separate effects for each channel. This is where my A5k sampler helps out a lot. I can run 8 separate (actual 10) and effect them as required. Needless to say, this goes well beyond anything normal. Not something I do daily either. I still think one has to determine what they are going to record or do then consider the hardware/software. A little time spent researching and asking many different groups might prove wise in the money spent department. Especially if you can find someone who is doing something similar. Clone their rig. Notable is the new Alesis ION. It has two separate stereo outs. I have not made it that far yet to actually use the additional aux outs yet. I'd like to thank everyone for the info provided thus far! Are there any good books that cover home studio topics in general that would be worth picking up at the local Barnes & Noble? I'm not looking to become the next music superstar, just trying to pick up the hobby again after about a 15 year hiatus. Peace! Scott __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? As opposed to using multiple outs - I'll set up a short, multitrack sequence (loop) on my ASR-X sampler and then resample a number of takes with a different insert FX or reverb depth applied to individual tracks. It's a quick and dirty way to build up a tricked out loop library which can be used in Logic Audio but it forces one to premix - not a bad thing for drum tracks at least. > I still think one has to determine what they are going to record or do then consider the hardware/software. Clone their rig. > Good advice. I picked up a 2nd hand MOTU 828 (the "mark I" original model) recently and it's been a real change trying the 'mixerless' approach. On the plus side, everything's ready to go when using Logic but if I simply want to rehearse or goof off without running Logic then it limits you to only one active input pair at a time. Kind of a drag but fixed in the MkII model (for a few hundred dollars more, of course!) My aging, 10+ year Mackie 1202 lacks a pre-fader switch for either Aux send which made it kind of a hassle to track with Logic - you just have to remember to turn down the gain on the on the right channels at the right time ;-) Definitely a feature I would look out for if shopping for a new mixer. > Notable is the new Alesis ION. Last summer or spring there was a discussion regarding music theory on AN1x-list - a number of interesting book titles were posted in that thread. If I find the thread in the archives I'll repost the link - otherwsie you can search for yourself... Jon
