Dave Smith has a cool keyboard version of his Evolver. There's a prototype here: http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/other/news.html Looks pretty. Rainbow Jimmy

I think we might have a few Evolver users lurking on AN1x- list (at least we use too), otherwise head over to EX5TECH because I know Ski contributed to the patch selection. The Poly Evolver was not inexpensive ($1000+) so I suspect the kb Evolver will also have a 'boutique' price tag. Jon

According to the web site they're trying to make it in the "$2k" range. Although it's tried and true subtractive synthesis via true analog generation as its basis (including 2 analog oscillators and 2 digital), its got great potential. Listen to some of the sound demos. The sequencer is applied to the filter in a lot of them, reminding me of the free envelope filter in the AN1x. Considering the 8 years since the release of the AN1x, you would think that a Super VA would have been released by now with super polyphony and extremely innovative design. Can't say I've seen anything like this at the stores lately. There's no doubt in my mind that somebody like Sayer WILL pay a premium for the benefit of the hardware user interface. The Evolver can be used stand alone but an editor/librarian seems necessary for the Poly Evolver. > > Considering the 8 years since the release of the AN1x, you would think that a > Super VA would have been released by now with super polyphony and extremely > innovative design. Novation came close with the SuperNova but it also was cost prohibitive for the average user - assuming that would be somebody such as you me who makes their living outside of music ;-) Clavia and Access seem to have found a formula for VAs that works - good for them (I still like the NL2.) Can't say I've seen anything like this at the stores lately. Well, there's quite a few of them already. And now that every man and his cousin can download a warezed copy of a soft synthesiser (or buy them, they're not that as expensive), producing a truly new and innovative synthesiser has become a bit of a business risk. Better play it safe and produce something that you *know* will sell. Case in point: the Roland V-Synth. There's nothing innovative in any of its components: we've seen them all before in other Roland products. But it's a very good synth, and it will sell on those merits. > Novation came close with the SuperNova but it also was cost > prohibitive for the average user - assuming that would be somebody > such as you me who makes their living outside of music ;-) For all the processing power that Novation stuffed into the Supernova, it still has aliasing noise. Rather than improving their algorithms, they have come out with one new product after another. They have to be careful not to go down the same route as Waldorf. > Clavia and Access seem to have found a formula for VAs that works - > good for them (I still like the NL2.) Take a good design and improve upon it. I just wish that Access wouldn't use the same board for all of its products. You know I hear what you are saying but I use programs a lot. I wonder if all the knobs output midi CC# or NRPN and if you can choose. I noted some are continuous variable, that is they have no stops, I would assume (bad to do) they might be NRPN. That only matters if, you plan on using it as a midi control along with it at the same time, you want to control it remote like or you want to have a midi control too to use to cut the number of keys you have.. etc... Maybe, and I bet, there will be someone there to answer these things in a few weeks. I hope the controls are not like the ION's. dale Administrator for Kay-Net.com admin@... Only casing and some of the features the casing supports (such as keyboard) differ between. I find this very genious idea (would have done the same myself). Heart of the synth is the same, so you don't need to design and produce entire new synth just to have different versions. If you look closely, the boards eg. in the new Virus TI look the same. Even the knobs are at the exact same places. Some people like the POLAR more than Keyboard.. or some people don't want Keyboard but want Desktop version. I wouldn't be surprised if there was rack version coming too (or mounting for the Desktop version). Offer the same synth in different packages for more wider customer base and price range with less work. Could say it's "collect 'em all" marketing ways with synths.. ;) // Jouni -- Jouni Airaksinen // www.markvera.net www.spacesynth.net the place where spacesynth scene meets!

Just one thing, could you not start each word with a capital? It makes your e-mails unreadable. I know why they do it, but their expense savings should not be my problem. Plenty of other manufacturers bring out products with a better user interface for about the same price. > Now, What Do You Think About This Zeus Synth? ;) Roland? Mlan? Are they doing ADAT already? I'll believe it when I see it. This thing would be too expensive anyway to be marketable. - Peter -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Yes, I can understand the business point of view, but it's one of the long-standing criticisms of Access, and they're not doing anything about it. Their business is not my problem. The user interface *is*. > Heart of the synth is the same, so you don't need to design and produce > entire new synth just to have different versions. But you can rack up the desktop. The connectors can swing for that very purpose. > Offer the same synth in different packages for more wider customer base and > price range with less work. > > Could say it's "collect 'em all" marketing ways with synths.. ;) Yeah... well. I've owned a Yamaha EX5R and now have an EX5S, and they have different motherboards. So it's not unheard off, even though the machines have exactly the same buttons. I wonder what Yamaha had put in the AN1r before they canned the project. - Peter -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. This can't be real, for a start it's got motorised panel controls and polyphonic aftertouch! But it would be nice if it was :\ufffd) Jez Creek - [Modulator - ESP] http://www.modulator-esp.co.uk http://www.soundclick.com/modulator

Yeap, Its Not Real. Its Just A Pretty Dream. Someone With Free Time Was Playing With People's Hope =) ... I Found the "Zeus" Picture In The JD800 User Group. I Would Pay 5000 For that (Hey! If The Jupiter 8 Is Being Sold Like For 3000) Ah, sorry about the capitals in each word. Im so used to do it that I am actually typing slower when I don't. > This can't be real, for a start it's got motorised panel controls and > polyphonic aftertouch! But it would be nice if it was :¬)

I don't think 5000 (dollar? euro?) would cover it. > Ah, sorry about the capitals in each word. Im so used to do it that I > am actually typing slower when I don't. NOT REAL! A little tear just dripped on my keyboard. You know, leaving out the "motorized controls" it could be made for under $5k. The proper construction would be like the ARP style, with the panel vertical to the keys. The Moog Voyager comes a bit close, and exceeds this guys ideas in design by having the 3rd VCO. A lot can be done with that third oscillator. Again, the Poly Evolver is getting close to something really creative in design by having the VS style digital oscillator section. A friend of mine just got a Roland Fantom... it's really tempting for me to ditch my 01/W rompler and A3000 sampler to have all of that horsepower in one keyboard. But there's no real innovation in the synth engine. Worst thing I find myself dealing with is that my old gear is large and heavy.
