[OT] Cable drawing

[OT] Cable drawing

2004-05-13 by Dave Miller

Hello All,

I need to make some cable drawings, I haven’t done this for a few years so I am looking for some ideas on a good CAD package.

I don’t need anything fancy, I am really looking for something easy to use and has a library a cable/connector symbols. Most of my drawings are DSUB and RJ connectors but there will also be a fair amount if circular DIN connectors on my cables as well.

What packages are you using for cable drawings? Did you have to draw your own libraries or could download/purchase connector libraries somewhere?

I am leaning towards visio or smartdraw. I have used them both and found it rather easy to draw symbols. Does anyone know of any 3rd part libraries for either of these applications that is dedicated to cable components?

Thanks,

Dave Miller

I just use Protel and put the info next to the connector IE Male D 15
with metal hood, or mini din 8.

I can not see the point in buying another package. when I have a
perfectly good one already. The only exception is for mechanical
drawings, which I use Autosketch for ( Acads little sister) but it is a
pain to use as it has soooooo much precision, that if all the parts are
not drawn on the same grid and snap size, you have lines that look
joined on the screen and are seperated on the hard copy.

I guess it is just horses for courses, but as I am prefecient in my EDA
tool, I just use it to do more things.

Regards,

Kat.

Thanks for the info.

That is why I am avoiding a true CAD package. I don't need the precision it
just messes up the drawing. You don't need to scale a line for 6ft when
simply drawing a line and calling it 6ft is perfect.

I use Eagle CAD I hadn't thought about using that for cable drawings, good
idea. I am thinking about purchasing Smartdraw or Visio for doing
flowcharts and network diagrams anyways. I am just hoping to also find a
3rd party library of cable connectors for one or the other.

Thanks,

I came across something called "expressSCH" and
"expressPCB". Go here to download it.
http://www.expresspcb.com/ExpressPCBHtm/Download.htm It has
a nice collection of connector symbols, it's free for the
downloading and is very easy to use. You can create your
symbols at will. It already has a fat library of symbols
for connectors, and AVR's too BTW.
