Radio Shack parts

Radio Shack parts

2004-10-03 by joedella

Radio Shack is selling all of their component parts at 1/2 price
through the month of October. These are the parts that are in the
cabinets in their stores. I saw the ad in the back of my Circuit
Cellar magazine, and it does work at the store, if you ask about it.

1/2 price probably makes the parts just about what they would be
worth in the first place.

Re: Radio Shack parts

If that includes the circuit boards, I'd pick up a few of those. The
276-168 and 276-150 are very useful.

Radio Shack's pricing policy is that the buy it for $1.00 and sell it
for $2.00 so a 50% off price is kinda scary.

I wonder if it is a move to more retail stuff or just clearing off
the dust on the parts.

But, I do agree that it brings the cost of some things down to a
reasonable price.

IMO, Radio Shacks pricing is more than 2 times. I think it's on the
order of 3 to 4 times but given that they pacakge the parts in nice
bubble packs for display and have to pay for retail space I can't see
them being able to keep the doors open any other way.

I buy from them if I'm prototyping something and don't want to wait
for mail order. Otherwise, Digikey.com rocks. I can buy 200
resistors for $5.00 (all of 1 value) from them vs. Radio Shack where
you get about 10 for $2.99. I'm not complaining. That's just life in
the retail world. My only wish is that they stock more parts but I
don't see that happening any time soon.

Be that as it may, does this mean that Radio Shack is going to drop components
altogether?

RE: [AVR-Chat] Re: Radio Shack parts

2004-10-05 by Daniel Boyer

I remember hearing, a couple of years ago, that they were going to be
fazing out all componet parts... Soon after I heard that I saw lots of
stuff go on clearance and component shelf space reduce significantly.
Everytime I go in a RS there seems to be a few less "components" and
antennas and more audio, computer, power, and cell adaptors and
accessories. My guess is that this is another one of their big
reduction sales (like the clearances I saw before) where the amount of
shelf space will be further reduced in the near future. I think that RS
will stop selling components with in the next few years (they just can't
be making enough money off of them to justify the stock space/time), but
it looks like they are taking the slow and gradual route so who knows
exactly when.

Re: [AVR-Chat] Re: Radio Shack parts

2004-10-05 by Mike Bronosky

I agree with all points I have seen on the Radio Shack matter.

If have enough, price wise and a few days shipping is OK, I prefer to order
form Digi-Key. However, if I only need a $1.98 or so in parts or need the
parts right now, I go to a local electronics wholesale vendor or RS. RS has
there place in my supply chain but usually that is 3rd on my list.

It all depends on the situation.

Right now, I need a DP NC pushbutton switch and a JB to house it. This $5
purchase is, 1st choice Electronics Supply, 2nd choice RS and 3rd choice
Digi-Key.

Should RS stop carring electronic parts it may help the vendors in small to
medium size cities stay in business and/or carry a bigger selection of
parts.

darn, I pay Jameco 99 cents per hundred. must be on the 'saw me
comming' list.

I like Mouser's prices for metalic film resistors. but, they offer
200 for 2 cents each so $4.00 for 200. Pretty much the same price
Mouser has for carbon film.

But, Between Jameco and Mouser, it is pretty easy to beat Digi-Key's
prices.

Of course the Tiny11 at Digi-Key is only 54 cents and at Jameco and
mouser it is $1.66 and 98 cents respectivly.

The AT90S2323 is $3.23 at didgi-key, $2.80 at Mouser and $2.63 at
Jameco.

I find that if Jameco has the parts, I can get an order delivered for
less than the Digi-key parts.

But, Digi-Key often has many more parts in stock.

DigiKey and Mouser -- their catalogs list all, ALL, of the products and
variations of many companies. Obviously these distributors cannot stock in a
warehouse even 10% of what's in these catalogs. So, is their business built
on being able to get the manufacturer to deliver to them (Digi and Mouser)
very quickly? Even for 3 each on some rather obscure items?

RE: [AVR-Chat] Re: Radio Shack parts

2004-10-06 by Larry Barello

I think they stock a lot more than you imagine! Almost everything I ever
order from Digikey ships literally within an hour or two. I have had a few
mad scrambles to the phone after clicking on the completion button and
remembering something I forgot to order. Sometimes I catch it, sometimes I
don't. They are really fast.

One tip: on the Digikey catalog, stuff that ends with -ND means it is
(normally) on the shelf ready to go. All other stuff is special order.
On-line they tell you exactly how much is in stock. Another tip: if
xxx-CT-ND (cut tape) is out of stock, order anyway as they will pull another
reel off the shelf and start cutting... Of course if the TR (tape & reel)
is out of stock too, then you are outta luck :)

Cheers!

-ND is a relic of the early days, means "No Discount".

The website will tell you how many they have of any part number.

Same is true of Mouser. It's probably worth mentioning that Mouser
doesn't charge a handling fee for orders below $25 USD like Digikey.

Interfacing with Smart Card Reader

2004-10-06 by Astria Nur Irfansyah

My friend has a Reflex 72 v2 (Schlumberger) smart card
reader. It has an RS-232 connection to the PC. I have no
experience using it, but i wonder if i can use this smart
card reader directly from a microcontroller based system.

The smart card i am using is an EMV card.

Anyone has any experince developing smart cards
appliances?? I want to make a gate control. Whoever wants
to pass through the gate must insert their smart card.

Any suggestions? I am also confused from where should i
start learning. Should i read the smart card standards
spec 1st? Or is there any simpler way, like just using
what the smart card reader can do??

Thanks

Nope, that's what I pay too, but I just checked their site and
they're discounted to $0.69. Must've just happened.

It is also my experience that just about anything you order from Digi-
Key that they claim to stock is in stock and ready to ship. I find
this to be slightly less so at Mouser. In either case, you can fiddle
with your order on-line to work around out-of-stock parts. Mouser has
on one occasion messed me up by claiming stock on line and then not
being able to ship.

Digi-Key have better handling of second shipments in an order and do
it at their expense. Mouser charge you again unless you use UPS
ground, which is not my preferred shipping method. To order from Digi-
Key, I had to request an on-line account and wait a day or so. Digi-
Key use recycled and recyclable packaging. Mouser use bubble-wrap.

I am fortunate to have an electronic components supply store in the
area I live and have no need of Radio Shack. I wonder how many of
these stores are around these days?

Graham.

Re: [AVR-Chat] Interfacing with Smart Card Reader

The reader handles all of the interface to the card.

It appears that the reader uses async serial (ie, UART
based) so there should be no real technical problem. You
will need to find out what is the protocol that the reader
expects on its serial port.

You WILL need an RS232 interface (receiver/transmitter) IC
or equivalent.

Do AVR's have a receive flag like PIC's do?

If so the pseudo-code would be this:

while 1
...while not receive_flag
...wend
...
...get receive_register data
...put data in transmit_register

Simple UART Code

2004-10-06 by Daniel Boyer

Does anyone have a simple program, or link to a program for simple
interface via uart with a terminal (ASM prefered)? I just want
something to quickly load into one of my chips to test my new 232 and
new usb interface circuits, so something that simple echos character,
sent from a terminal, or something like that. I know I used to have
have some programs like that, but that was over two years ago and I have
since lost all the code for my projects from that time frame.
Thanks

The simplest way, is to set up the uart, and then load bytes into the uart tx register, looping till it's empty for the next byte. Of course this is rather wasteful of time.

Assunto: [AVR-Chat] Simple UART Code

Does anyone have a simple program, or link to a program for simple
interface via uart with a terminal (ASM prefered)? I just want
something to quickly load into one of my chips to test my new 232 and
new usb interface circuits, so something that simple echos character,
sent from a terminal, or something like that. I know I used to have
have some programs like that, but that was over two years ago and I have
since lost all the code for my projects from that time frame.
Thanks
Daniel

Depends on the chip. Some have USIs that don't do async, others have USARTS that do.
The USARTs have flags and interrupts for both directions.
I generally use them with tx and rx buffers, and interrupts.

I used to drive past a Future/Active store, but sadly, it is not a
crafts shope.

that's the Costco business model. But Costco sells only mass market appeal
items. And they have free food samples.

If they have a 15 day stock turnover and their purchase terms are net30 +
whose money is it anyways ;)

I live in Maine but was out in Foster City CA last week for work.
Just so happens I was 5 minutes away from Jameco and I needed a few
parts so I programmed the rental car's GPS system to the street
address on the catelog and drove over. Didn't really see anything
impressive but did have my parts in hand in minutes. :)

Of course, the wife is kind of used to seeing the boxes from
Digikey and Jameco on the front porch every week. This was sort of
cool in a total geek sort of way.
