Hi, Just joined this group.

I have been in electronics for 25 years and most of my experience is
in embedded systems. I worked for a PIC consultancy so while I heard
of AVR's I have not used them yet.

Did you come here to talk about AVRs or to advertise a rather shaky looking product?

contributor or not
it still doesn't give him the right to bash anyone else for including a
link
as there are three in his signature to a "in my opinion" rather shaky
looking
religion or quasi-religion having little or nothing to do with avr's
and pcb software however shaky is at least in the electronics realm

Had Ralph not said anything and just hit the delete button as I had done
we wouldn't be having this discussion.

with that said I will say no more about it

You obviously haven't been around this list very long, Jon. Many of the
more frequent posters, who also provide a great deal of assistance to
others, do likewise with their signature lines. If memory serves
correctly, one of Ralph's links also provides code that he offers for
anyone to use if they wish. You really ought to be a bit cautious
before attempting to climb someone's sneakers, Jon. The person whose
tushi you're attempting to blister might just be the one you need
assistance from at some time in the future. And since you brought the
issue up, the original poster didn't bring anything to the table about
AVRs in the least. This is, after all, an AVR list you know.

Sorry did not mean to cause all this trouble.

The link is put on automaticaly by my emai lsoftware as I use that
email address for work.

I am most certainly interested in AVR's.

I have removed the link to prevent any future upset.

I normally ignore all links in other peoples emails.

Hi Harry,

I think you will find AVR's impressive. In most applications I find they
have many advantages over PIC's (probably the other most-used RISC
microcontrollers). I find them easier to program and implement. There are
some instances when I will use a PIC (I don't know of an AVR as small as
the PIC 10F200, with only 6 pins). But most of my microcontroller
applications these days are with AVR's.

I personally like to program in AVR assembler. However, if you use C or
another higher-level language, there are a lot of programs out there (many
are free) that you ca use.

Look through the group files on Yahoogroups and also visit

I'm a moderator on 6 lists and an owner of one. It still amazes me what
some people will do to get spam advertising onto these Yahoogroup lists.
Most owners and moderators are leery of people who join and immediately
post spam e-mails. They usually get the boot.

However, I didn't see that to be the case in Harry's (is that your name?)
e-mail.

Hi Zack,

  My name is Nigel Wright.
I studied electronics in 1980 and got my City and Guilds T224 in industrial electronics.
My first job was working for a company that designed modems and Prestel adaptors.
I started off as a test engineer but quickly moved up as they realised I could also repair and design the equipment better than their current designer.
I was there for 3 years but was offered a job as an electronics design consultant.
This was where I got involved with PIC's, my boss had previously worked for general instruments on one of the first PIC'.s
I did this for around 14 years.
I was made redundant and was taken on by another design company for 4 years as chief design engineer.

  Nigel.

Hi Harry,

I have mostly programmed in asembler and even managed to program a PIC to do multitasking on a dual oven with a 256 * 64 vacuum fluorescent display and rotary encoder inputs. I still have most of the code I wrote for PIC's.

I have done a couple of projects in C as I took over those projects from people who left the company.

I used Delphi quite a bit for programing PC's but more recently got into C#.
Many of the projects I have done have involved comms to a PC program. I use Microsofts Visual C# as this is a free compiler.

  Nigel.

Ok gents.. Lay off on the link bashing.

I approved that message, and I didn't see anything inappropriate in the
link.
Many of the folk on this list have something to sell, and as long as it's
reasonably AVR/electronics related, reasonable mention of your products is
fine.

Ralph's devices are AVR based, and while I personally don't believe that the
things they are supposed to measure actually exists, but they are AVR based,
and are legitimate projects at least in as far as they are good design work,
and worth looking at from that point of view.

And I could be wrong.

I thought the emails were a bit harsh.
Pretty much every group allows appended links but not outright advertising or inappropriate advertising in teh main body of the email.

Given the PCBCAD software has been used for dozens of microcontroller projects then it is very relevant. An AVR would be pretty useless with a PCB to put it on.

I have designed some pretty big boards with microcontrollers on them.
I designed an add on for the Ford Escort Cosworth so you can modify the engine management. It add 50 BHP to the already 200BHP on the car.
We used a PIC and an ASIC but wanted to test the basic theory using TTL logic first.
The board used about 30 TTL chips and the PCBCAD software we had (Easy PC) was useless for placing the components.
I had my own basic PCBCAD software and wrote an autoplacing algorithm for it and it worked great. Clearly there are n! possibilities for laying out n components.
This could take forever so I settled on a swapping autoplacer that simply swaps 2 of the same component if swapping them improves the net length. I found with this I got massive improvements in net lengths. The PCB was about 18 inches by 18 inches.

The microcontroller was used to try and stop people copying the ASIC.

  Nigel.
