As an FM (sort of) synth, the VZ can make some great bass sounds, though it
does take a bit of work to get there. With the additon of the sawtooth
waves (which the DX7 and other fm synths lack), it can also produce many
harsher sounds which somewhat resemble distortion or oscillator sync. It
won't have the immediacy of an analog synth, or an analog-style sound, but
it can make some very nice deep bass sounds which can definately compete
with analogs.

But you have to be willing to spend time programming it. If you're looking
for quick and easy analog bass sounds then don't bother. And anyway if you
just want to use it for bass, it's kind of a waste because it can do much,
much more than that.

Anyway I've heard micromoogs are pretty weak for bass unless they're
modified slightly. Due to a design flaw, there's a coupling capacitor
that's too small and acts as a highpass filter.
