Here's the post to the wind controller group that wasn't censored. ============================================================= I have been lurking here for a few weeks, but there is much more discussion than I can handle. It is of interest to me, but I just don't have the time to devote to it. I can tell you a little bit about the VZ-8M, having had the unit for a couple of decades. Over the past year, a few VZ enthusasts have breathed new life into it with some new patches--available at the CZ- VZ Yahoo group. The new patches designed by users blow the factory sounds away. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/files/VZ%20-%20Sounds/ The VZ synth architecture is like a cross between the Yamaha DX (and offspring) line and Casio's CZ line. The sounds are definitely bona fide digitally controlled synth sounds. By today's standards it is not a rompler with synth samples. For documentation on VZ programming, see http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/files/VZ%20-%20DOCs/ The CZ/VZ uses iPD -- "interactive Phase Distortion." Basic waveforms are read from ROM, but the sound shaping devices (DCO/DCF/DCA on the CZ and the algorithms on the VZ) modify the way basic wavform(s). Hence, iPD. The VZ line allows you to create your own algorithm--the arrangement of the oscilators. There are 8 oscilators per voice which can be set up in different configurations (mix, ring modulation, and phase modulation). The VZ-8m does indeed have a special wind controller mode which makes the synth engine more suited to wind controller performance. Most notably, the sensitivity curve of aftertouch data for values 92- 99 are variations of an S curve. (More recent synths may also have S curve data sensitivities.) Hope this helps.
