It is covered in an old Electronic Music magazine. I'll have to dig it out. Basically, you decide whether you want auto-power-off, or not. Then you hrd wire that. The switch is then connected to 2 places on the circuit board, a couple traces are cut, and the switch will now select bank 1& 2, or 3 & 4. As for why it doesn't work in the 101, I'd check the solder connections at the board the card plugs into. There also may be different programming styles between the larger synths. Have you tried programming into the card with the 101, and seeing if you can access it once programmed from that specific synth?
i need to try this with my 101s and my CZ-1. There may be a difference what with velocity etc.

Can you explain what the automatic-off power switch modification is and why
it affects the RAM cartridge (RA3 I assume)? I have an RA3 cartridge that
refuses to work with my 101 (and a friend's 1000), yet it works fine with
my CZ3000 and CZ-1. I've tried replacing the battery but it still refuses
to work with the baby CZ's :(
